Four women killed
coming home from
club near border
DONNA, Texas (AR) - Four
women were shot to death in their
car in an ambush near the Mexican
border early Thursday as they
drove home from the nightclub
where they worked.
A fifth woman in the car was
wounded and was hospitalized in
guarded condition, and a sixth was
found uninjured, hiding nearby,
sheriff’s Capt. Roy Quintanilha said.
‘‘We don’t know who was the tar
get,” he said. “We don’t have a
motive.”
The women, employees at
Garcia’s Place, were apparently
fired on after their sports car
stopped to drop off one woman at
the trailer where five of the women
lived, he said. They had left the bar
after it closed around midnight.
Vaccines ordered for
workers at anthrax
contamination sites
ATLANTA (AR) — Workers at
buildings contaminated with
anthrax should receive a vaccine,
not just antibiotics, to protect them
from the deadly agent, the govern
ment announced Thursday.
Federal health officials issued
new guidelines specifically for
anthrax cleanup cases, saying the
existing rules for work in hazardous
sites don’t go far enough to protect
those workers.
Protective suits and antibiotics
are not enough, said Dr. Elena
Page of the National Institute of
Occupational Safety and Health.
The suits can fail, and it may not be
healthy to use antibiotics for the
long periods of time workers can
spend on a cleanup job.
“They’re not perfect,” Page said
of the previous rules. “We wanted
a vaccine in place to give highest
level of protection to the workers."
No cleanup workers in last fall’s
anthrax attacks caught the dis
ease. Five people died after han
dling anthrax-tainted letters sent
through the mail.
First major building
destroyed 9/11 open
NEW YORK (AP) - The Winter
Garden, a 10-story vaulted alu-
minum-and-glass atrium, reopened
Thursday, becoming the first major
building destroyed in the Sept. 11
attacks to come back to life.
Gov. George Pataki and Mayor
Michael Bloomberg lauded workers
for rebuilding the popular public
space that was the centerpiece of
the World Financial Center com
plex within the one-year deadline
set by its owners.
“When you saw the magnitude of
the devastation, this day seemed
very distant,” Pataki said. "The
Winter Garden is a symbol of how
New Yorkers are triumphing over
this tragedy.”
The reconstruction included
replacing the metal framework and
2,000 panes of glass, bringing in
60,000 square feet of marble floor
ing and steps, and replacing 16 40-
foot Florida palm trees.
The Winter Garden was across the
street from the World Trade Center’s
twin skyscrapers. It was gutted by
falling steel beams and other wreck
age as the north tower collapsed.
The space will reopen to the pub
lic Sept. 17.
Mark Delavan, lead baritone of
the New York City Opera, sang
"America the Beautiful” to start
the reopening ceremony Thursday.
Bloomberg said the “ambitious
goal of restoring this glorious pub
lic space ... has been realized in
spectacular fashion.”
