The story of SIMONE follows Viktor Taransky (Pacino), a megalo- maniacal director whose career in Hollywood is reaching an end. Fights with self-absorbed actors and financially motivated studio executives have left him artistically drained and blacklisted. With the best film of his life only shots away from completion, Taransk/s prayers are answered when a terminally ill computer programmer gives Taransky his life's work: a fully digitized actress. The product of years of programming and the combination of hundreds of actresses' performances, Simone (Roberts) is indistin guishable from a real person on screen. Replacing the original lead in his film with this virtual actress, Taransky completes his film and Simone is catapulted to stardom. However, in the following media storm, Taransky must jump numerous hurdles to convince the world Simone exists. Once this mission is accomplished, Taransky becomes increasingly over whelmed by public demand for more work by their new idol, who begins taking on a life and career of her own, one Taransky finds he can't easily control. The results are incredibly entertaining, humor ous and thought provoking, much as The Truman Show was. SIMONE actually succeeds in being more entertaining than The Truman Show, but the cost is perhaps a slight decrease in impact. This 21st century retelling of Pygmalion's obsession with his art bravely attempts to tackle the relationship of creator to creation, but stops short of making the type of climactic statement The Truman Show made, settling instead for a more traditional ending that, while not out of place, reduces the weight of the movie's message to more of a social commentary. Despite this, SIMONE is a fantastic movie, delightful and engag ing. Definitely worth full ticket price, and even worth owning. Pacino's performance is excellent, and newcomer Roberts is defi nitely going to be an actress to keep an eye on. - Michael Whitlow d you'll have the pren*, rge 'Iceman' Chambers, ar. n Chambers ts convicted: Sweetwater Prison, a mar /ery lucrative mter-pnson: f the league ts former dvr Undisputed Miramax Films Directed by Walter Hill Starring Wesley Snipes and Ving Rhair What if an imprisoned Mike Tyson met up with a convict whe* match in strength, speed and ferocity? Prison officials work to keep the two separated until oneofpi: oners, an ex-Mafia boxing fan, arranges the greatest fight the w never see. And that's all you need to know to skip straight to the climao. scene. The rest of the movie ts unimportant filler. Hutchins spec majority of the movie in solitude, building a toothpick pagc& spouting warrior-zen quotes like a second-rate Mr. Mryagt. Own spends the rest of it beating up hapless pnsoners and argur; lawyers, which has no beanng on the outcome of the fight The preview is good, the premise ts interesting, but its efic leaves a lot to be desired. The problem, however, is not the ar the director. It's apparent after watching the movie that ever y and a half is too long to try to tell a 30-minute story. * Mtchod i 1 / I v,u , L I 1,1.
