Valuable experience was gained by the young Aggie squad in a 2-1 double-overtime thriller against SMU last Sunday. With seniors Jessica Martin and Heather Ragsdale out of the lineup with injuries this week end, the young leaders on the team will have to step up along with seniors Juli Coin and Amanda Starns in order to beat this weekend’s competition. The first stop is Friday night in Palo Alto, Calif., where the Aggies will take on No. 2 Stanford University (1-0). Last year, in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Championship tourna ment, the Aggies beat Stanford 1-0 to advance to the Elite Eight. The Stanford Cardinals are fresh off their victory over No. 1 Santa Clara and are look ing to exact revenge on the Aggies for last year’s season ending loss. “We’re probably playing the best team in the country right now,” said A&M head coach G. Guerrieri. “I know from past experiences, playing them twice Panthers Continued from page IB over 300 pounds all the way across. They run extremely well and we think they’re one of the best defenses we’ll play all year.” While A&M’s starting quarterback, senior Mark Farris, was benched in the second quarter after throwing eight con secutive incomplete passes, Slocum and A&M offensive coordinator Dino Babers say Farris will be starting on Saturday. last year, they don’t have a weakness. If there was a team you didn’t want to play right now, Stanford would be the team.” The Aggies figure a strong defensive performance led by junior Martha Moore can weigh heavily on the outcome of the match. “They just beat the national champ Santa Clara so we’re a little nervous,” Moore said. “[SMUJ had the speed, but the organization will be a lot better coming from Stanford.” Offensively, the Aggies appear strong already. Sophomore Linsey Woodard leads the team with 13 shots and two goals while Sopho more Emma Smith is second on the team with eight shots on goal. “For the past two games [the offense] improved so much,” Woodard said. “We’re hoping that we can continue to work better off each other. We’re not really used to what each other is doing and reading each other so hopefully we’ll be able to pull it together.” To finish the weekend trip, the Aggies will travel south to Berkeley, Calif., to take on the No. 11 University of California Golden Bears (2-0). Last year, the Aggies beat California 3-1 in San Marcos, Texas, making revenge a motive for the Golden Bears as Senior Juli Goin attei Tuesday mght.
