Heston takes his

LOS ANGE
LES (AP) -
Oscar-winning
actor Charlton
Heston says he
was stunned
when doctors
told him he
has symptoms heston
consistent
with Alzheimer's disease.
"It got my full attention,"
Heston said during an interview
that aired Wednesday on NBC's
"Today" show. "I've always been
sure of my health and this sud
denly gave me something else
to think about. But maybe it's
good if Cod gives you some
thing to think about every so
often."
Portions of the interview
were being broadcast over sev
eral days this week on the
"Today" show.
The 77-year-old actor has
given several interviews since
his dramatic Aug. 9 videotaped
announcement.
Heston said he hasn't detect
ed any change in his mental
capacity.
"I feel good," he said. "This
came as somewhat of a sur
prise. But life is full of surprises,
isn't it?"
Heston, who won a best-actor
Oscar for 1959's Ben-Hur, said
he isn't frightened about the
future.
"Whatever happens happens,"
he said. "You take it in stride if
you can. You don't have many
options there."
Heston said he's been over
whelmed by the response from
well-wishers, including calls from
President Bush; former first lady
Nancy Reagan, whose husband,
former President Reagan, suffers
from the degenerative brain dis
ease; and Sarah Brady, chair
woman of the Brady Campaign
to Prevent Gun Violence.
Heston has served as presi
dent of the National Rifle
Association since 1998.
