Sophomore forward Emma Smith is among the leaders of the pack as the Aggies look to I make a charge for the national [ championship this season. Smith took the 2001 season with stride as she played in all 22 games as a freshman. She improved steadily over the sea son and made her mark as an offensive star in the postseason. Smith scored the game-win ning goals in the Big 12 semifi nal against the University of Nebraska and in the first round of the NCAA Championship tournament against Southwest Texas State University. A&M head coach G. Guerrieri has made Smith the starting forward for the 2002 season opposite fellow sopho more Linsey Woodard in his 4- 4-2 formation. “She emerged in the postsea son as a fantastic finisher and is a threat to open a game up any time she is around the ball," said Guerrieri. "She will be looked upon to make a huge offensive contribution for us this year." Smith started the 2002 cam paign where she left off assist ing on freshman Carrie Berend's opening goal against Rice University in the Aggies first game of the season. During Sunday night's overtime game. Smith almost ended the game twice, once with a blistering left-footed shot in the 60th minute that hit the crossbar, and again in the 102nd minute when Smith's shot went inches wide of the net. She emerged in the postseasoti as a fantastic finisher and is a threat to open a game up any time she is around the ball. — G. Guerrieri Texas A&M Soccer Coach The Beaverton. Ore. native has traveled the furthest of any other Aggie player to attend Texas A&M, but it really is not as far as one might think. "My parents actually met at A&M." said Smith, who was bom in Bryan. Coming to A&M was not a tough decision for Smith. Although highly recruited, the third generation Aggie chose A&M after one visit. "When I came on my visit 1 had such an unbelievable time, and I left with the feeling that this was where I wanted to be," said Smith. "Advice was given to me to go where you feel you fit in, and where you get along with the girls because if you don't get along with the team you're not going to play well." Smith's freshman campaign began as a solid contributor off the bench. As the season wore on. Smith found more and more playing time. "It took me a little while to get comfortable and to find my game again," Smith said about the 2001 season. Now Smith finds herself in a new season, and a new role. With eleven newcomers to the Aggie squad. Smith must now step into a leader's role. "It helped me so much how (upperclassmen] were confident towards me," said Smith. "I've done the same things toward the freshmen (this year) when they first got here." Many of those around her believe that Smith has grown as a leader as well. During the match with SMU on Sunday, Smith could be seen shouting at the crowd to get loud, as well as encouraging her teammates while relentlessly attacking the Mustang goal. With a young team like the Aggies, A&M fans hope that the Aggies will remain at the top of the collegiate soccer world. JOHN C.
