THE BATTALION
For many upperclassmen, learning the
ropes around campus has taken time and
experience. Although the days of moving
into dorm rooms, purchasing books and
finishing last-minute schedule changes are
distant memories for experienced students,
they are the present for incoming students.
With this in mind, many upperclassmen
pass lessons of experience on to A&M’s

Upperclassmen are the
best people to ask for advice
because they have been there
before.’'
— Elaine McChesney
Sophomore speech
communication major
newest generation.
Jenny Windle, a senior biomedical sci
ences major, advises incoming students to
maintain a balance between school and
social activities.
“If you aren’t able to give one-hundred
percent to everything, then you're in too
much,” Windle said. “Don't overexert your
self. Find a happy medium among school
and social activities. Being able to balance
allows you to give one hundred percent to
everything and do well in all of it.”
Windle suggests limiting oneself to two
or three organizations to avoid becoming
overwhelmed. She stresses that studying
too much will prevent students from
building a social foundation —
but there is a flipside.
“If you are socializing
too much, then your grades a
will drop and that is show
ing that you are not appreci- I
ating what the Lord has
given you - being able to
be a student at A&M,” £
Windle said.
Aaron Thorpe, a senior
biomedical sciences major, advises incom
ing students to carefully choose a major.
Since majors differ as to how specific or
broad job options may be, Thorpe recom
mends incoming students investigate the
classes within the major as well as the job
opportunities available in their chosen
major. Thorpe said by the time he realized
he didn't want to pursue his major, he had
already taken too many hours to transfer
degree plans.
“If you don't know what you are getting
into, you may be in for a shock later down
the road,” he said.
Thorpe says students should talk regu
larly with an advisor to avoid the same
predicament.
Thorpe, who says he remembers all the
meals he wasted his freshman year, also cau
tions students to approach meal plans carefully.
“You can always buy more, but you
can't get your money back for the ones
that you don’t use.”
To those who ride a bike around cam
pus, Thorpe recommends following traffic
regulations just as if driving a car.
“I’ve seen PTTS set traps,” Thorpe said.
“They would sit at a stop sign where they
couldn’t be seen and then ticket bikers

who ran the stop sign. The same alsoj I
for cross walks. Fve seen peoplebeiij
ed for walking when Ithe walk sign]j
‘Don’t Walk.’”
For Elaine McChesney, a soptej
speech communication major, find!
upperclassman to mentor her helped
her transition to A&M more smooth.
“At orientation, they give youaSi
packet of names and numbers and
later on when you register, you talli
phone system or get on the website,
real person,” McChesney said. “Witli
experienced student, they can showyi
the options available and let you ki
pros and cons of each option.”
McChesney recommends findins
upperclassman in the same major tote
one to go to for help because theyarenj
familiar with class requirements. How
any upperclassman should be
explain basic campus survival.
For McChesney, learning whichproi
sors and advisors were best and
tutoring programs were worth aiteni
was among the most valuable informr
she learned from an experienced stm
“Upperclassmen are the best peo|
ask for advice because they have li
there before,” McChesney said.
According to McChesney, taking!
initiative to meet people and get involvt):
an important key to a successful first)4
“Go dorm room knocking,” she saidf I
may sound like a strange idea togoknol I
ing on random people’s doors, but«■
one feels uneasy, and they are waitin«|
meet someone. It will make;
so much better to see a
ilk face around campus, even if Ji
don't remember their name."
McChesney stresses
lege is a chance to start
She advises incoming studif j
to “be real" because colleet|j
not like high school in these! |
that there is less pressurej
conform to what is popular.j
“Everyone is in the sa
place,” McChesney said.‘|
F real and reach out because
will take you far.”
