By The Way by the Red Hot Chili Peppers is the one. Almost 20 years after its first album debuted, the Red Hot Chili Peppers recently released its eighth album. Anyone expecting another BloodSugarSexMagik will be surprised by the mellow feel of this offering. The band’s newest release moves further in the direction Californication went in 1999 with more melod ic tracks and poignant, melancholic lyrics. There are no two songs alike on the album; anyone can find at least one song they like. By The Way boasts songs with Latin flavorings, horns and perhaps most notably, strings. After listening to the album once, the ques tion may arise as to if the disc was worth the money spent. So much of the music is a big step away from the musical genre that made the group famous. However, no matter how much the band pushes its boundaries, there is no doubt whose album it is. Every group has a sound that is undeniably theirs. That sound, which includes Anthony Kiedis’ unmistakable voice and clever rhymes is very much present, leaving the listen er secure in the knowledge that they are indeed listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It is a strong, well-crafted release by the group and is certain to become a favorite among die-hard Pepper fans and casual listeners alike. 3 * -Denise Schoppe Flaw is back with a new album the band has a record deal. Flaw with Universal Records and Repi the Eyes, is an intense blend of har melodies. This mixture produce; record that has a message. The directive out the entire CD is that you only have ya; so you have to find your own way; nooneel; do it for you. The lyrics may be the most® sive aspect of this album. They are even impressive since the band wrote all of them “Payback.” the first single, embod® musical style expressed throughout the® album. The music starts out hard, (help and the two contrasting sounds swiid through the rest of the song. If you have seen Flaw' in concert you are exposedtohisi aggressive vocals, so you may be surprised, hearing the CD that lead singer Chris VolzL more melodic voice. However, in somed songs his scaling becomes a little redunda: you can still appreciate his vocal talent. As a special treat on the album, therear: renditions of "Only the Strong,” the sots most exemplifies the album’s theme. The version is harder, while the second is itso site, inviting a slower and more mellows This just proves Flaw’s versatility. Flaw is on its way up, and if Throughthi is any indication, the band is well onitsp success. —Elizabeths NEW Baseball of oppos testing > to be cht starting i Unde J^dresse in contrt be subjt unannou de term in use.
