Sens. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., and Aden Specter, R-Pa., charged that U.S. ally Saudi Arabia has aided militants behind the latest deadly attack. “There are a few killers who want to stop the peace process that u we have started, the president said in response to the suicide bombing. “We must not let them.” Speaking from the first tee of a golf course, the vacationing Bush said he was distressed by the news out of northern Israel that greeted his pre-dawn rising for an early game of golf with his father. A Palestinian suicide bomber struck a bus near the northern town of Tsfat during rush hour, killing at least nine others and wounding dozens more. The terrorist group Hamas claimed responsibility. “For the sake of humanity, for the sake of the Palestinians who suffer, for the sake of the Israelis who are under attack, we must stop the terror,” Bush said. “I call upon all nations to do every thing they can to stop these terrorist killings.” Lieberman, a strong supporter of Israel, charged that Saudi Arabia is aiding Palestinian organizations, including Hamas. The United States and its allies must “cut off the flow of support to Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist groups that’s coming from Iran, Iraq, Syria and, I fear, Saudi Arabia,” Lieberman said on “Fox News Sunday.” “Hamas and other terrorists groups claiming credit for bombings such as those that have occurred this week, including those that killed five Americans, have sent money from Saudi Arabia to these terrorists groups,” Lieberman said. “That can’t go on any more if there’s going to be peace.” Specter also voiced “grave doubts about the Saudis really being our friends” and said on CNN’s “Late Edition” that he, too, believes Saudi Arabia gives financial aid to Hamas. Administration officials consider it common knowledge that private Saudi citizens give money to groups like Hamas, but they have not come out with evidence of financial back ing by the Saudi government. Saudi officials have insisted that while they support the Palestinians in their struggle against Israel, they do not encourage suicide bombings. “For those who yearn for peace in the Middle East, for those in the Arab lands, those in Europe, those all around the world who yearn for peace, we must do everything we possibly can to stop the terror,” Bush said Sunday, spending a long week end with his parents at the Bush family’s summer home on the Maine coast. There are a few killers who want to stop the peace process that we have started. — President George W. Bush NEWS IN BRIEF Catholic church decides where to put molesters When America's Roman Catholic bishops decided any priest guilty of molesting a youth should be ousted from active ministry, they left a major loose end hanging — what to do with those priests. During the June meeting where they approved a tough ened clerical sex abuse policy, bishops remarked that erring priests could be assigned to live in special "houses of con finement" or monasteries. Taiwan leader says island, China are separate countries TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwan's president said Saturday the island "is not someone else's province" but rather an independent country separate from China — bold comments that risk enraging Taiwan's giant communist rival. President Chen Shui-bian also repeated his support for a vote on whether Taiwan should seek a permanent split with China, suggesting the island amend its laws to allow such a referendum. He said holding such a plebiscite "is a basic human right" of the Taiwanese. "Simply put, with Taiwan and China on each side of the (Taiwan) Strait, each side is a country. This needs to be clear," he said from his office during a video telecast. Registration Continued frompa? f ing parking fees or ticket!
