Oklahoma retailers
fight sales tax holiday
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -
Oklahoma retailers are bracing
for a fight with their counter
parts in Texas as the Lone Star
state's annual tax-free holiday
approaches.
Businesses in Oklahoma are
planning sales this weekend to
try to stop Sooners from flocking
across the Red River.
A Texas law lifts the sales tax
on shoes and clothes priced
under $100 during the first full
weekend in August every year.
Texas officials say the state has
gained $334 million in revenue
NEWS IN BRIEF
since the tax-free holiday started
in 1999. The state gets an over
all bonus from hotel, restaurant
and other travel-related receipts,
and from the purchase of items
not exempt from sales taxes,
officials said.
Prime Outlets in Gainesville,
Texas — just south of the Red
River — gets 60 percent of its
traffic from Oklahoma, a
spokesman said.
Perry says ads will
