I KNOW THAT GRADUATION IS NEAR. | BUT YOU SHOULD RELAX A LITTLE BIT... yOU ARE TRYING TOO HARD...IS IT REALLY GOING TO MAKE THAT MUCH Technology classes offered online By Melissa McKeon THE BATTALION In response to downsizing in the information technology (IT) work force in Houston, Dallas and other areas, Texas A&M’s computer science department will offer a gradu ate certificate program starting Sept. 1 through distance educa tion. The courses offered in the certificate program will be available entirely on the web and will be directed toward areas in high demand by the Texas IT work force, said Dr. Dick Simmons, computer sci ence professor and one of the program’s coordinators. “By offering graduate-level computer science courses over the Internet, professors at Texas A&M hope to improve the Texas IT work force,” Simmons said. Students can specialize in software engineering, telecom munications and network secu rity and interaction design. A non-degree-seeking stu dent taking four courses in one of the specializations will receive a certificate upon completion. Simmons said that IT work ers who feel their jobs are at risk have the opportunity to earn better credentials in their line of work and become more productive and more mar ketable to future employers. “Our key motivation is to serve the students better,” Simmons said. “Once they complete the certificate pro gram, [their degree] can be applied towards any degree that will accept these courses.” Students can take a 12 cred it hour block of related gradu ate courses through the certifi cate program in which the stu dent gains both job-related knowledge and the credentials of a graduate certificate, he said. The distance education pro gram in the engineering college has confirmed the need for Internet-based courses accessi ble any time by those who hold a full-time job. “We understand that it’s dif ficult for any student to go to work and graduate school,” Simmons said. “Therefore, these are regular courses with Internet sections.” Bowen Continued from page 1 is relationship that the University and this community developed with President Bush,” Bowen told the chamber members. “That is a reflection on you and the events that this facility able to bring to our cities.” He also expressed a hope that A&M and the Bryan-College Station communities would make history by housing two Presidential libraries in the future. At the luncheon, Bowen was hailed by colleagues for his han dling of the 1999 Aggie Bonfire collapse and his poise when fac ing the nation concerning the deaths of 12 Aggies. Bowen acknowledged the Board of Regents he worked with and thanked them for their support during the Bonfire after- math. the battaiI Correction to article: "CARPOOL Spreads $- Ride Message," publish Monday, July 29: The article read, "CARP; recently received a $20,; donation from local altr distributor Kristen Distrife Company and Milwaufe based Miller Bret Company..." The evaluations may be in the form of locally proc- tored exams, take-home com prehensive exams, oral presen tations or research reports and projects. The evaluation directions can be submitted by mail, e- mail, downloadable website!*, or fax — whichevpt the instructor decides. The consis tency and content of all exami nations will be the same whether students are on or off campus. Candidates for the courses will come from workers in the information technology area with a bachelors degree in sci ence, engineering or informa tion sciences, Simmons said. Joey Beierle, a senior com puter engineering major, thinks the new program offerings are a great advantage. “I think that if you’re dedi cated to your profession, these classes are a great advantage if you don’t have the time to sit in a classroom,” Beierle said. “A&M seems to want to expand students’ capabilities in the technology industry.” Haden expounded on benefits this building would; vide in the area of chem engineering. “This building will alio, to expand in new areas important to the state’secoi» — and to our students - maintain a strong base inck cal and refining technolop he said. “It will house cl rooms, administrative office a visitor’s center ... that sin cases the history of the chem industry and chemical engine ing, and the Mary O'Connor Process Sal Center, with strong ties to chemical industry.” The new building w replace the current facilities the Zachry Engineen: Building, which were designed to house thechemk engineering department Dr. Rayford G.
