General says Iraq increasing attacks on
coalition aircraft over ‘no-fly zones’
WASHINGTON (AP) — A top U.S.
general said Monday that Iraq has
increased attacks on coalition aircraft
over “no-fly zones” and is now challeng
ing them at the same rate it did before
Sept. 11.
The U.S-British coalition patrolling
the zones bombed Iraqi sites twice over
the weekend in response to two such Iraqi
attacks, said Air Force Brig. Gen. John W.
Rosa Jr., deputy director for operation at
the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The bombing followed a coalition
strike Saturday on another Iraqi air
defense facility in the south.
Both strikes were launched after
Iraqi air defense units fired on coalition
aircraft. They follow a number of such
incidents in recent weeks. Pentagon
officials said.
At the State Department, spokesman
Richard Boucher endorsed a weekend
call by exiled Iraqi military officers for a
revolt against Saddam Hussein.
“It sounds like a good idea ” he said.
Boucher said the London meeting of
the exiled officers was a useful tool in
helping the Iraqi community to move
closer to the goal of a better future for the
Iraqi people after Saddam Hussein.
“We’re seeking an Iraqi government
that’s broad-based, representative and
respects the principles of justice, the rule
of law and the rights of the Iraqi people
— a regime that can live at peace with its
neighbors, complies with Security
Council resolutions and maintains Iraq’s
territorial integrity,” he said.
Discussing the Iraqi attacks on coali
tion aircraft, Rosa said, “It appears that
there’s been a spike, but as we measure
them over the last 18 months, they’re not
unusually high.”
He said that after Sept. 11, attacks in
the no-fly zones subsided slightly, but now
“they’re back up to the normal levels.”
An Iraqi military spokesman had
reported that seven Iraqi civilians were
injured in air raids Saturday. The claim
could not be independently verified.
The incidents come as the United
States weighs options to topple Iraqi
President Saddam Hussein. Iraqi opposi
tion leaders also met over the weekend in
London to discuss their role in any bid to
oust Saddam.
A regime change in Iraq is a stated pol
icy of the Bush administration.
U.S. and British warplanes have been
monitoring the zones over southern and
northern Iraq since shortly after the 1991
Gulf War to protect Kurdish and Shiite
Muslim groups from Baghdad.
Iraq considers the zones violations of
Iraqi sovereignty and frequently tries to
shoot the planes down.
