SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Heavy rains
continued to pound Central lexas on
Tuesday, forcing evacuations near San
Antonio and road closings across the region
as Gov. Rick Perry activated the lexas
National Guard to assist.
“We’re just kind of stuck here in town. "
Bandera Mayor Denise Grifhn said. ‘All of
the roads out ot Bandera are basically
closed.”
Three days of rains in Central Texas
come less than a week after restrictions
were imposed in San Antonio because ot a
continuing drought.
Bandera, about 40 miles west ot San
Antonio, had to evacuate three RV parks, a
motel and the lower part of town from Inst
through fifth streets, Griffin said. She esti
mated between 50-100 people had been
evacuated.
There have been no serious injuries in
Bandera County but several water rescues,
said Bandera County Judge Richard Evans.
In Vanderpool in western Bandera
County, a county commissioner was trapped
in her home and had to climb onto her loft
before the water receded. Evans said.
Several shelters have been se t up for
those who have been displaced.
In Hays County, about 70 roads have
been closed because of high water.
“Everything is flooded that can be
flooded,” said Hays County Sheriff's Sgt.
Allen Bridges. “There is no way to get east
or west or north or south in the country
right now.”
By early Tuesday afternoon. Hays
County had no evacuations. Bridges aid.
Perry said two UH-60 Black hawk
National Guard helicopters were activated
after cars became stranded by high water on
Interstate 10. An additional 20 National
Guard personnel and 10 large trucks were
sent to San Antonio to assist with water res
cues and evacuations.
“Our first priority is to ensure the safety
of Texans during this weather emergency.”
Perry said.
Three additional Guard helicopters arc on
standby in Austin to help with rescue opera
tions in counties affected by floodwaters.
