SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Heavy rains continued to pound Central lexas on Tuesday, forcing evacuations near San Antonio and road closings across the region as Gov. Rick Perry activated the lexas National Guard to assist. “We’re just kind of stuck here in town. " Bandera Mayor Denise Grifhn said. ‘All of the roads out ot Bandera are basically closed.” Three days of rains in Central Texas come less than a week after restrictions were imposed in San Antonio because ot a continuing drought. Bandera, about 40 miles west ot San Antonio, had to evacuate three RV parks, a motel and the lower part of town from Inst through fifth streets, Griffin said. She esti mated between 50-100 people had been evacuated. There have been no serious injuries in Bandera County but several water rescues, said Bandera County Judge Richard Evans. In Vanderpool in western Bandera County, a county commissioner was trapped in her home and had to climb onto her loft before the water receded. Evans said. Several shelters have been se t up for those who have been displaced. In Hays County, about 70 roads have been closed because of high water. “Everything is flooded that can be flooded,” said Hays County Sheriff's Sgt. Allen Bridges. “There is no way to get east or west or north or south in the country right now.” By early Tuesday afternoon. Hays County had no evacuations. Bridges aid. Perry said two UH-60 Black hawk National Guard helicopters were activated after cars became stranded by high water on Interstate 10. An additional 20 National Guard personnel and 10 large trucks were sent to San Antonio to assist with water res cues and evacuations. “Our first priority is to ensure the safety of Texans during this weather emergency.” Perry said. Three additional Guard helicopters arc on standby in Austin to help with rescue opera tions in counties affected by floodwaters.
