J&S Studies, Inc. 979-774-5933 3201 University Drive East, Suite 475 Bryan, Texas 77802 Monday, July l, 2002 Brazil Continued from page 3 it did the samba in the stands. Each member of the Brazilian contingent held hands and gathered in a circle in the middle of the field just before Cafu accepted the trophy. “We did not have a debt, but we are free now of the weight on our consciences,” Ronaldo said. That weight now might fall on Kahn, the best goalkeeper of the tournament until he made an egregious error in the 67th minute. The Germans actually were controlling play, looking as adventurous as Brazil, until Ronaldo struck. He stole the ball from Dietmar Hamann and fed his attacking partner, Rivaldo. The hard left-footed shot was stopped by Kahn, who was impenetrable for nearly the entire month, allowing just one previous goal. But the ball ricocheted off Kahn’s arms directly to Ronaldo, who touched it home with his right foot. “Of course, it’s bitter when you make a mistake in the final,” Kahn said. “I think it was the only mistake in the tourna ment, and it was bitterly pun ished — it’s 10 times as bitter. “There’s no consolation, but we have to go on.” Ronaldo got another goal 12 minutes after his first, one fea turing that special Brazilian magic. Rivaldo cleverly allowed Kleberson’s pass to roll through his legs directly to Ronaldo just inside the penalty area. He right-footed a low shot that a sprawling Kahn could not reach. "Today God reserved this for me and the Brazilian team,” Ronaldo said. “I’m very happy and proud. I dedicate these goals to my family and to Dr. Gerard Saillant.” Saillant is the French doctor who performed surgery on his knee, saving the career of the 25-year-old striker. The victory set off wild cele brations in Brazil, where the sounds of car horns, plastic Mattiace Continued from page 3 Notah Begay had a share of the lead for a hole but shot a 69 and finished third at 16 under. David Toms (68) was fourth, David Howser, who got into the tournament on a sponsor’s exemption, shot a 64 and tied for fifth with Jim Carter (68), Tripp Isenhour (68) and Matt Kuchar (71). Hnatiuk had been trying to become the 10th first-time win ner on tour this year. But he had never led a tournament before this week, and struggled with a 77 that included five bogeys, a double bogey and two birdies. He wound up tied for 14th. Mattiace had no such prob lems. He had two birdies on the front nine and turned at 13 under. He got his birdie streak going as he strung together birdies on Nos. 11 and 12. He then birdied Nos. 15-17 that gave him a share of the lead first with Hnatiuk, then Begay, and finally took it himself at the tournament, which is sponsored by FedEx. Begay had his chance when he tied Mattiace at 16 under with a birdie on the par-3 14th. He promptly gave a stroke back on the next hole when he followed a poor tee shot by putting his approach into the lap of a fan sitting behind the green at the par-4 15th. Begay took a drop that landed near an asphalt path, chipped back across the green and his chip to save par just missed along the right edge for bogey. Mattiace birdied the par-5 16th and took the lead to him self at 1 7 under. His birdie putt on No. 17 put him 18 under, and he just missed a birdie putt left on No. 1 8. He tapped in for par and waited with his family, then hit a few balls on the prac tice range. Petrovic had his chances with birdies on Nos. 15 and 16. He left an eagle putt short on the par-5 16th, and just missed forc ing the playoff on No. 18. SPORTS THE BATTALION trumpets and fireworks filled the air. Thousands of beach-goen danced in their bathing suits and yellow Brazil jerseys to the music of Samba drums beforea giant-screen TV up on Riode Janeiro’s Copacabana beach. Many fans in Germany were devastated. They hoped this team, which no one expected much from before the tourna ment, could end its surprising run with a fourth World Cuf championship. In Berlin, as a crowd of 3,000 filed away from Potsdamer Platz, many fans remained in front of a large-Bto lam screen TV, holding their face and crying after the final whis- naive tie blew. During a tournament high lighted by upsets from the ven beginning, when Senegal bea: defending champion France in the opener, the Brazilians never faltered. While such favorites as France, Argentina and Portuga went home early, and South Korea, Turkey — even the United States — was making its mark, Brazil ignored it all. “They have these incredible individual skills,” German; coach Rudi Voeller said. “The; are so strong one-on-one. The; are worthy world champions They showed it today and in other games as well.” They showed it with flair, particularly from the "Three Rs,” with midfielder Ronaldinhc returning from suspension to spice the attack that Ronaldo fin ished off. They did it with defense, par ticularly from Edmilson, who made a brilliant block of Jens Jeremies’ header early in fhe second half. They did it with Marcos, who had four shutouts and ws unbeatable. His best wort Sunday came on Olivrr Neuville’s blistering free bo he barely tipped off the goal: and out of play. And they did it for Brazil. “The secret is enthiw/a-Mi, friendship, union and writkA Scolari said. “We hadtore^ the image of a victorious Brazil.” Kile Continued from page 3 JEFF SI Iv Kile struggled through the first half of this season before pitch ing his most impressive outing in over a year, just three days prior to his passing in his hotel room in Chicago. Whether Kile had found a way to reach the consistency he desired so much will now never be known, but the impact he made as a clubhouse leader on every team he played for left no doubt to anyone but Kile him self that he was worth every penny he was paid. Now, from Little League fields to Major League ball parks, baseball must not forget to remember the legacy that Kile left behind. Young play ers should strive to imitate Kile, n0 because of his 1993 no-hitter when pitching for the Houston Astros or his 20 win season tor the Cardinals, but because he offered so much to fans and other players. Even after struggling through two years in Colorado, Kile never made an excuse about why he did not play we ’ He knew he was paid to play 3 game and that he owed it to everyone to give his best et o every time he took the moun Though Kile has now left baseball unexpectedly, we m all hope that his spirit is sti alive somewhere among the greed and dishonesty that h the game today. May his spi and values remain with eac child picking up their first baseball glove in the hopes o playing in the Major League 8 someday. And may his spin remain with all of us who g° about our lives not thinking^ the people we spend each an everyday with. His passing has created a void for baseball, but for al who knew him personally an for all who loved him profes sionally, he will live forever' our hearts. ra 'ha! ha] observ on Se| securi ends, is not realize statioi Wf all An has m Unitec currer bordei Th impor natior U.S. g »above I Couni immi] for he Th • of fail 480,0 ■ since of citi respo grant! |exces plans tinue De enteri this p C A Kevin Espenlnub is 4 history maf' becor State: Envir welfa al me 1 cities 1 with I ing tl other ; estab Tl ; abide syste I contr ] tion < >; it COI biase Tl | becai | 1990 ' has a
