Enron employees to
receive additional
severance pay
NEW YORK (AP) - Employees
laid off by Enron Corp. will
receive an additional $29 million
in severance thanks to a federal
bankruptcy judge's preliminary
ruling that effectively doubles
the amount already paid to
4,200 former workers.
The former employees are eli-
NEWS IN BRIEF
gible to receive even more,
according to the terms of the
ruling made Monday by Judge
Arthur J. Gonzalez.
Lawyers for the laid-off
workers hope to recover tens
of millions of dollars in bonus
es that Enron paid to top
employees to prevent them
from leaving the crumbling
energy company in the 90
days preceding its Chapter 11
bankruptcy filing.
The ruling comes after several
months of negotiaticr;
between Enron's lawyers a-:'
those'representing the laid-:’’
workers. The former employe
originally had been seeking-'
additional $68 million, oram-
imum of $30,000 per employn
The final hearing is schedn;
for Aug. 12.
The severance agreeme'
voluntary and gives fc
employees the option of(V
out and suing the compart)M
their own.
