Aggie and Longhorn unite to produce short films
i
By Micah Grau
THE BATTALION
When Andy Morris and Bobby Leshikar
first met in high school, neither of them
knew that some day they would be operat
ing a short-film production company.
Morris, a junior interdisciplinary studies
major at Texas A&M, and Leshikar, a sen
ior English major at the University of
Texas, have managed to put school rivalry
aside all for the sake of Mor or Les
Productions. Inspired by filmmakers like
Kevin Smith, who also started out with
next to nothing, the two hoped to have
some fun and gain experience in film pro
duction.
“We had some scripts to work with, but
we both had jobs and girlfriends,” Morris
said. “I lost my girlfriend and Bobby lost
his job, so we ended up having some extra
time on our hands.”
Both Morris and Leshikar agree that
filling their high school years full of a vari
ety of activities has helped them to suc
ceed. Time spent in Odyssey of the Mind
and Destination Imagination has helped in
their quick thinking and aided them in cre
ating characters spontaneously.
“You read the script but the script doesn’t
reveal much about the character’s life, so my
experience in various clubs has really helped
out in showing how my character would feel
in their current situation,” Leshikar said.
Both Morris and Leshikar are armed
with theater experience from high school
as they participated together in UIL One
Act Play.
After a week of classes at their respective
universities, the two met up and found they
had nothing to do. Morris had already start
ed making home movies for his family using
his sister’s digital video camera and the
iMovies program on his computer. Taking
this experience, Andy planned to make
home movies for other families by filming
and then editing whatever people would hire
him to do.
“The problem with home video is that
people just record them and then never
watch them again,” Morris said. “After edit
ing and adding music, you can create some
thing that will be enjoyable to watch over
and over again.”
Morris said the idea first came to him
after filming birthday parties for his
nephews and observing that they wanted to

watch the final edited home movie over and
over again.
An expanded credit limit meant a digital
camera of their own for Morris and
Leshikar. After searching around they found
a camera on clearance. Using friends and
family to play miscellaneous roles, they
were able to save money by not having to
pay cast members. With their new digital
camcorder, a supply of cast members and an
iMac computer with iMovies for editing,
the two set out to create their first short
film. Starring both Morris and Leshikar,
the short was filmed at Morris’ home.
“Nothing To Do is a piece to inspire peo
ple to do something because a lot of us are
just sitting around doing nothing, which is
what inspired us to start making movies in
the first place,” Morris said. “After filming
and editing, we had to re-film due to audio
problems. I’m glad we did because it ended
up being much better in other ways.”
Once filming and editing was complete
for Nothing To Do, the duo set out to create
another short film titled An Angel, which is
a heartfelt version of the “Good Samaritan”
story. Andy explains the basic idea behind
An Angel is that one should treat everyone
as though they could pay you back, even if
you know they can’t.
An Angel was even submitted to the

Rivers Cuomo is a rock and roll genius.
Cuomo, the brains behind the band Weezer and
its newest release Maladroit, has outdone him
self this time. Maladroit is what hard core
Weezer fans have been waiting for. With pinch
es of Pinkerton, mixed with shades of the
“Green" and “Blue" albums. Maladroit delves
into the soul with driven songs like “Slob” and
“Slave,” while still managing to dip into the
lighter side of life with “Burndt Jamb” and
Dope Nose, the first single of the newly
released album. The hard core design of “Take
Control,” the bluesy, melodic feel of “Death
and Destruction and the brazen lyrics of
Slob establish the experimental music
stylings that make this album unlike any other
Weezer album to date. Maladroit is a trip from
beginning to end, something not too rare for a
Weezer album. Cuomo fuses pop melodies with
metal riffs, while still managing to stick to the
familiar Weezer sound found on previous
albums. Maladroit listeners will be surprised to
find the absence of catchy choruses exempli
fied in such favorites as “Say It Ain’t So”
“Buddy Holly” and the more recent
Hashpipe. Although some may find this to be
disappointing, Maladroit brings out the raw
side of Weezer and proves not only is 11
king of the catchy tune, but the master ofnu
cal reinvention. A great album from begmn
to end, Weezer has surpised listeners once nlt
with Maladroit and taken its muscial talen 111
new and welcome level.
