Senate Dems offer revised prescription drug proposal WASHINGTON (AP) - Senate Democrats blended their liberal and conservative views to offer a revised prescription drug proposal Wednesday they hope will appeal to older Americans this election year. Democratic Sens. Bob Graham of Florida and Zell Miller of Georgia last month outlined a plan, estimated to cost $425 billion over 10 years, that would require older Americans to pay a $25 monthly premium while the gov ernment would cover 50 percent of the cost NEWS IN BRIEF of a prescription. There would be no deductible. But some liberal Democrats, particularly Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts — the chairman of the Senate's health committee — worried that such a proposal might be too costly for seniors. The revised $500 billion version — whose sponsors now include Kennedy and Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle — drops the 50 percent copayment. Instead, it would require a flat copayment of $10 for generic drugs and $40 for brand name drugs. The poorest would not have any pay copay ments or premiums, or would have reduce: rates, depending on their income level. Hie would also be a $4,000 cap on out-of-pod; expenses. 'This bill is just what the doctor ordere: Kennedy said. Senate Majority Whip Harry Reid, D-Ne said Daschle was committed to trying to pc legislation by August. But in a sign that the war of words overp; scription drugs was intensifying, Rep.; Thomas, a House Republican also writing proposal, said the Senate plan was"acn4 hoax." 53jM BACK AT IXIORTHGATE WE WERE SELLING SUBS TO AGGIELAIUD BEFORE MOST OF YOU WERE EVEN BORN!!!
