(AP) — After nearly a week of delays, NASA hoped for a break in the weather Wednesday that would allow it to launch space shuttle Endeavour to the interna tional space station. Endeavour will drop off a new crew at the orbiting outpost and bring home the three men who have been living there for the past six months. The shut tle’s astronauts will also repair the space station’s robot arm. Forecasters on Tuesday put the chances of acceptable weather at just 40 percent. Thunderstorms remained a threat, in addition to thick clouds and possibly gusty wind. As part of the space agency’s post-Sept. 11 anti-terrorism measures, NASA kept the 5:23 p.m. launch time a secret until 24 hours in advance. The three men aboard the space station kept busy as the! waited for their ride home Americans Daniel Bursch an; Carl Walz will surpass NASA space endurance record net week, an achievement they 4 not expect when they rockete: into orbit in early December. In March, NASA added, month to the space statioi crew’s mission to give tin i Endeavour astronauts moit ‘ time to prepare for the wort | on the robot arm. The arr needs a new wrist joint, and: pair of spacewalkers will per form the surgery. NASA tried to launc Endeavour on the 12-day fligk ; last Thursday but was thwam by thunderstorms that ultimatel ■ pushed liftoff to Monday. Seventeen crime family arrests made NEW YORK (AP) — Seventeen alleged members ofttih Gambino crime family, including two brothers of John Gotti, wen arrested Tuesday and charged with such offenses as shaking down: longshoremen’s union and trying to extort money from tough-gii movie star Steven Seagal. Prosecutors in Brooklyn said that convictions in the case woul: | deal a crushing blow to Mafia infiltration of unions and businesse along New York City’s waterfront. Those charged include Peter Gotti, brother of the imprisons Dapper Don. Peter Gotti was identified as the Gambino family sew I rent boss. Another Gotti brother, Richard V. Gotti, and a nephe*; Richard G. Gotti, were charged as well. The alleged crimes included an attempt by Julius Nasso, a forme business partner of Seagal, and others to “extort hundreds of thou I sands of dollars from an individual in the film industry,” cow papers said. Two law enforcement officials, speaking on conditio: of anonymity, identified the extortion victim as Seagal. Seagal’s attorney, Martin Pollner, said the star of such actio: films as “Under Siege’’ and “Exit Wounds” had “severed his reli tionship with Mr. Nasso some time ago.” The lawyer declined fw ther comment. Nasso sued Seagal earlier this year for $60 million, accusinghir of backing out of a contract to perform in four movies. The charges also included racketeering, extortion, gamblin: money laundering and witness tampering. Court papers allege the defendants used threats to assume coiM of Brooklyn and Staten Island chapters of the Internation;' Longshoremen’s Association. Once in control, they allegedly riggf union elections and secured the award of a lucrative union heali service contract for a mob-controlled company. All the defendants were awaiting arraignment. Their attornc) were not immediately available for comment. Bush renews effort to reshape welfare laws Work requirements for welfare recipients mean liberation, not punishment. President Bush said Tuesday as he renewed his effort to shape welfare changes now before Congress. Lawmakers must renew the nation’s 6-year-old welfare law this year.
