It is no sur prise that the cheerful single "Hello" was included in the feature film Orange County. But a visual medium is not needed to witness the breadth of Sugarbomb's tal ent. Solely relying on the bouncy beats and optimistic lyrics of the album's 11 tracks will provide a more-than-sufficient dose of sweet satisfaction. Sugarbomb's chief staple is its versatility, not only in the multitude of instruments, but also in the dynamic tones of the melodies. Les Farrington and Daniel Harville sing lead, but all five members of the band contribute to the album's vocal tapestry, which is laced with a little bit of electronica here, a tad of atmosphere there and pop and punk everywhere else. The light, breezy euphony of "Posterchild for a Tragedy" may leave the listener with a har monious headache, and the up-tempo and occasionally explosive rhythms of "Gone" and "Waiting" could give an ear ache — in the best senses of the word, of course. While the guitar is the most palpable of instruments heard in Bully, it is not its essence. Generating in the nucleus of the album and swelling outward is the ever-present pulse of Farrington's keyboard, giving most of the tracfcs a jolt of joviality and songs like "Clover" a Gothic cadence. Hopefully Sugarbomb's next album will be as sweet as the name implies and as delightful as Bully. (Grade: B+) —Matt Patin Chris Ledoux After The Storm Capitol Nashville The title of this CD should be Once A Cowboy, Always A Cowboy, because although the music has been clean and polished, the essence of Chris Ledoux as a cowboy who sings, not a singer who rides, is as true in 2002 as it was in the 1970s, when the former world champion rodeo star turned on his tape recorder. Ledoux re-recorded "Bareback Jack" for After The Storm. It is a great song and was the first time it appeared on Ledoux's album in 1972 and then again in 1987, 1994, 1997 and now in 2002. Ledoux writes great original songs, but why does he keep repeating them on his albums? "Bareback Jack" is not the only exam ple, just compare the playlists of any of his greatest hits collections from the last decade. Sticking to his cowboy roots, "Cowboy Up" is the wisdom of a learned roughrider, but really, the lessons Ledoux teaches through his cowboy music can apply to most any situation in city slicker life, as well. Ledoux has some fun, too. "Don't It Make You Want To Dance" two-steps and twirls in the Saturday night life Ledoux knows well. Garth Brooks also joins Ledoux on "Some Things Never Change." Even cowboys like a little bump 'n' grind. The disc is smooth, but lacks the soul-wrench ing storytelling of previous albums.
