building in phases, the Hospice can raise
money over time and still be able to run its
facilities.
Magnuson and Bodegas designed a court
yard area in the center of one large building that
included a pond, donor walls and a memory
garden with a brick path that has the name and
life span of each resident.
“This is a unique project.” Magnuson said.
“It integrates the business side and the hospital
element.”
Mann said several of the teams experimented
with expanding the current hospice facility located
at 881 1 Gaylord Ave. in Houston. But. he said, the
students determined that the site is not large
enough to accommodate the center’s anticipated
future needs.

summons,” Cates said.
“Everybody knows everybody.”
State District Judge Vic
Cunningham, who moved the
trial to East Texas, made the
unusual move of publicly nam
ing the eight women and four
men selected for the jury panel.
Participants in the trial are barred
from talking about the case out
side the courtroom.
“In Dallas, no one knows
anyone else on a jury. Here
everyone knows one another.”
Cunningham said recently. “We
are hoping by knowing who is on
the jury, people will observe the
rules and make it a point to not
ask them questions or talk in
front of them about the case.”
The panel includes a machin
ist, bookkeeper, retirees, former
Texas Department of Corrections
manager, truck drivers and a
nurse. Four jurors work at the
Mount Vernon Independent
School District.
Defense attorneys Mike
Charlton and Gary Taylor were
hired by Rodriguez’s family.
Rodriguez is the third of the
escapees to be tried in the case.
Hawkins was shot I I times
and run over with a vehicle in the
parking lot of an Oshman's
Sporting Goods store while try
ing to stop a robbery by the
inmates, who escaped from the
Connally Unit in South Texas on
Dec. 13, 2(XX).
'Hie inmates stole $70.(KK) in
cash and a large cache of
weapons from the Irving store.
Rodriguez was serving a life
sentence for capital murder in
San Antonio when he escaped.
He was convicted of paying a
man $2.(XX) to kill his wife so he
could collect S4(K).(XX) in life
insurance.
Rodriguez’s w'ife was shot in
the head in July 1992 after she
came home from a movie.
Investigators said the defen
