they will not renew Curry’s contract. Curry is a tomier graduate student
of UT-Tyler and longtime reporter for the Tyler Morning Telegraph.
“No one ever told us before what information we have a right to,
McClure said. “The administration has never had students question
administration before.”
More controversy surrounds a new Publication Administrative
Council comprised solely of administrators with the power to hire
and fire the newspaper faculty adviser and student editors, and
“determine the character and policies of all student publications.
Student publication decisions at most schools, including Texas
A&M and the University of Texas-Austin, include student input.
The Patriot staff consulted the Student Press Law Center on the
legality of the administrative council.
"'Student Press Law Center attorney Mike Hiestand said, “What is
proposed is administrative control with a lot more power than they
are legally allowed.”
Although the Patriot staff said administration has refused to
comment to their own paper for the last two weeks, a UT-Tyler
administrator told The Battalion Thursday that the process to
change the policy has started already.
The administration is considering the concerns raised and has
requested information from other schools on how to include stu
dents in such decisions, said Dale Landsford, UT-Tyler's vice pres
ident for student affairs. Any changes made by the Student Affairs
Advisory Committee will be sent to the provost and then to the uni
versity president for final approval, he said.
Patriot editorial writer McClure wrote an inflammatory column
last week denouncing the administration’s “communistic" policy.
Since then, she said statewide media has covered the issue and
McClure said The Patriot also received a tip that a student protest
will occur at the university’s bell tower.
“The bell tower has become a symbol of where our investigative
journalism started,” McClure said.
Wreck

Krueger hit the light pole. Porter
said he could see him slumped
over the steering wheel.
Porter said that when
Krueger hit the bus, the Bronco
hit close to the bus’ driver-side
front tire. The car finally
stopped and witnesses ran over
to turn off his car and make sure
he was not injured.
“The ambulance responded
quickly, but he woke up by the
time the ambulance got there,”
Porter said. “He looked like he
didn't know what had happened.”
The police officer who
responded to the accident was
required to take the names of all
the students on the bus. Porter
said they stayed at the accident
scene for 20 to 30 minutes.
Students were about 15 minutes
late to class. Porter said.
Krueger’s Bronco did not hit
any other cars, and no other
injuries were reported.
