Ags hit road for last time to face Baylor By Dallas Shipp THE BATTALION With only four matches [remaining in Big 12 play, the A&M women's tennis team is in the middle of the race for the Big 12 Championship. However, all the teams stand ing between it and the title are ranked among the top 35 in the nation. The No. 25 Aggies are in third place behind No. 12 Texas and No. 33 Kansas in the Big 12 standings with a 6-1 conference record. Both the Longhorns and Jayhawks will travel to College Station to face the Aggies during the last week of the season. “The conference race is extremely crazy,” said A&M head coach Bobby Kleinecke. “Itcan all change very rapidly this last week and a half.” No matter how crazy the other conference matches end this weekend, if the Aggies win their last four matches, the title will be theirs. “We control our own des tiny,” said A&M senior Robyn Bassett. “If we win out, we will be Big 12 champions. 1 think that is what every single person on this team wants. It’s going to be tough, but we have the right team to do it.” While A&M is aware of the importance of its upcoming matches with Texas and Kansas, it is not looking past this week end's contests against Baylor and Kansas State. “We have Baylor and Kansas See Road on page 8B A&M pitchers rule doubleheader, throw consecutive shutouts By Micala Proesch THE BATTALION Any team can talk about packing a one- two punch, but the pitching staff of the Texas A&M softball team proved on Wednesday that it can deliver. Sophomores Jessica Slataper and Lindsay Wilhehnson combined to throw back-to-back shutouts as A&M ran over the Texas Tech Red Raiders 3-0 and 7-0 to sweep a doubleheader at the Aggie Softball Complex. Slataper threw a one-hitter for the Aggies in the opening game of the doubleheader, which was followed by Wilhelmson’s two- hit performance. “Both of our pitchers threw great tonight," said A&M head coach Jo Evans. “They both had their change ups working well, and they attacked the hitters at the plate. When they pitch like that, not many teams can beat them.” This contest was Slataper’s sixth one-hit ter and 10th shutout for the season. She also has two no-hitters this year, including last weekend’s victory over Kansas. Despite narrowly missing the no-hit bid when Tech bunted its way on base, Slataper was pleased with her performance. “As long as we come away with a win as a team, I am happy,” Slataper said. In the second game, Wilhelmson had a perfect game going into the sixth inning when Tech pinch hitter Amanda Douglas lined a ball to shallow center to break up the bid. “In the sixth inning, I was thinking no hitter all the way, and of course that is when they break it up,” Wilhelmson said. “I threw her an outside drop, and she hit a good pitch and got around on it.” Wilhelmson also struck out a carehr-high and team season-high fifteen batters in the JOHN LIVAS • THE BATTALION A&M shortstop Crystal Martin tags Texas Tech base runner Kristi Robles for the out at second base during the Aggies’ 3-0 victory over the Red Raiders on Wednesday at the Aggie Softball Complex. outing, which is unusual for her being pri marily a ground-ball pitcher. The Aggies also exploded offensively against Tech, pounding out 10 hits in the nightcap and going deep three times in the night. With no outs in the bottom of the second, Lindsay Wilhelmson helped her own cause by slamming a ball over the left field fence. In the bottom of the fourth, junior catcher Selena Collins went deep for the 10th time this season, bringing A&M’s team total to 29, which ties its season high set in both 1985 and 1996. “I was really pleased to see our batters swinging the way they were,” Evans said. “We didn’t give in to their pitchers at all, and we stayed patient at the plate, which made all the difference offensively.” With the wins, the Aggies move to 5-5 in Big 12 play, and they are two steps closer to a winning conference record. Despite their impressive overall record, the Aggies have been frustrated with their conference performance, and the wins on Wednesday give them confidence going into the home stretch. “It was nice to come out here and get back on the train towards Big 12 wins, which is what we needed,” Collins said. “From here on out we are hungry for wins, and being a top-ranked team, their is no reason why we shouldn’t be winning ballgames.” believes he died- me after his arift ; he’s killed no® lerman general' believe he r service Presented by: & Msr.
