Catholic school
officials upbeat
despite scandal
NEW YORK (AP) —
Leaders of America’s Roman
Catholic schools can recite a
daunting list of challenges —
tight finances, teacher retention,
shifting demographics.
The ever-growing sex abuse
scandal among clergy has left the
vast network of schools, run most
ly by lay people, largely unscathed.
“Our schools have never been
more important to the church,”
said Michael Guerra, president of
the National Catholic Education
Association. “We will not be
blind to the pain and grief that
exists — we will
simply redouble u
our efforts to con
vince people that
we take the trust
they have in us
very seriously.’
With about 94
percent of their fac
ulty and adminis
trators now coming
from the laity.
Catholic schools
have won wide
praise — for high-
er-than-average
test scores and graduation rates
and for their emphasis on moral
values.
Admirers include inner-city
minority leaders and Protestant
conservatives, as well as Catholic
parents whose children remain on
parochial school waiting lists
even as the scandal spreads.
Catholic schools also have
their problems. While many pros
per, especially in suburbs, tight
budgets and shifting demograph
ics are forcing scores of other
schools to close each year — and
enrollment is down slightly.
Tuition increases have made
the schools less affordable for
working-class parents, but
Catholic school teachers still gen
erally earn 25 percent less than
their public school counterparts.
“We’ve had success recruiting
good young teachers, but not
great success retaining them,”
Guerra said.
Long term, Guerra hopes pub
lic funds will become available to
help parents afford Catholic
school tuition. A pivotal ruling
could come in June, when the
U.S. Supreme Court decides
whether publicly funded vouchers
in Cleveland can be used at pri
vate and religious schools.
Roughly 2.6 million students
attend the country’s 8,114
Catholic schools. Enrollment
dipped by 30,000 students last
year — more than 1 percent —
and construction of 50 new
schools was more than offset by
the closure of 80.
Many of the closures were in
inner cities where racial minori
ties and recent immigrants have
replaced suburb-bound white
Catholics.
“The church’s decision was to
stay and educate
the next generation
of newcomers,
whether they are
Catholic or not,”
Guerra said. “It’s a
tough promise to
deliver on because
of economics —
the newcomers are
often of limited
means.”
Outside the
inner cities, hun
dreds of Catholic
schools have more
applicants than they can handle.
Daily revelations about sex abuse
by priests has not changed that.
“Our enrollment is high, the
parent support is great,” said Jim
Gerker, principal of all-boys
Chaminade College Preparatory
School in St. Louis. “Students
have pretty strong opinions, but
they haven’t talked a lot about it
... I don’t think kids put priests on
a pedestal as much as adults do.”
Dentist Chuck Grelle, whose
18-year-old daughter will soon
graduate from St. Louis’ all-girls
Visitation Academy, is skeptical
of the church’s handling of the
scandal. But Grelle, like his
a product of Catholic schiSraK
said his heart remains in parochial
education — and his church. h
“It hasn’t affected my faith at
all,” he said.
In Boston, the epicenter of the
scandal, allegations of sexual
abuse have extended into the
Catholic school system. Former
students of Boston College High
School accused three priests,
including one who was still
teaching, of sexually abusing
them from the mid-1970s to
early-1980s.
Our schools have
never been more
important to
the church.

National Catholic Education
Association president
NEWS IN BRIEF
Three boys trapped in Civil War-era mine
THIDA, Ark. (AP) — Dreams of gold drew them in. Teams of rescuers
pulled them out.
Three boys who went looking for riches in a Civil War-era mine got
caught in a cave-in that trapped them in a crawl space 200 feet under
ground for a day and a half. Rescuers dug with their hands and small
shovels and crawled on their bellies to reach the three, who were a little
dehydrated and scared but unhurt.
William Zachary Foster, 9, had feared the worst. “We wasn’t going to
get out. We didn’t have any food and we’d starve to death,” he said
Tuesday at a hospital in Batesville, where the three boys were treated.
The boy had been eager to search for gold after finding sparkling dust
on his shirt in a previous trip to the mine. On Sunday morning, he and his
brother, David Keith Foster, 11, and their 19-year-old cousin, Jeffery
Keith Foster, set out with their black Labrador, Precious, to explore.
Scientists discover new species of whale
VERNON, Calif. (AP) — Scientists have discovered a new species of
whale, a startling find made through DNA analysis of some of the marine
mammals that washed ashore in California over the past three decades.
The 13-foot beaked whales, named to reflect their pointy snouts, were
previously lumped together with another species found in Australia and
New Zealand.
Genetic analysis of the five known whale specimens indicates they rep
resent a species distinct from their southern Pacific cousins, despite their
similar appearance.
"Even off the coast of California, where we thought we knew everything,
we’re discovering new species,” said John Heyning, a deputy director at
the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, where remains of
several of the newly identified beached whales are housed.
The new whale becomes the 21st species of beaked whale to be
described scientifically. A report detailing the discovery will be published
in July in the journal Marine Mammal Science.
Jurors hear voicemail recording of shots
fired in office shooting trial
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — The jury in the trial of a man accused of
killing seven colleagues at a software company listened to a chilling
voicemail recording Tuesday with a rapid succession of gunshots in
the background.
Michael McDermott, 43, a software engineer, is on trial for gunning
down his co-workers in 2000 in what prosecutors said was revenge for
Edgewater Technology’s plan to withhold some of his wages to pay off
back taxes owed to the IRS. He claims he was insane at the time.
More than 30 victims' relatives and jurors listened while prosecutors
played the voicemail message. Later, Edgewater employees took the
stand and tearfully described hearing their co-workers beg for their lives
and then get shot.
