Kenseth victorious at Fort Worth race FORT WORTH. Texas (AP) Maybe practice is overrated. Matt Kenseth won the Samsung/Radio Shack 500 on Monday despite running only five laps in practice at Texas Motor Speedway. His few laps came Friday, before he blew an engine. Saturday’s practice was rained out. and more wet weather Sunday postponed the race, leaving everyone guessing about chassis set 's on the repaved 1/2-mile oval. Kenseth found tbe answer, hold- the lead with a late-race, two-tire stop and driving to an easy victory in his No. 17 Roush Racing Ford. "When you have a fast car, sometimes you don’t want to /wctice too much and start miking changes that might slow you down,” Kenseth said. “Really, we had kind of decided on our own what we were gong to run on our car and it was pret ty close to the set-up I ran on my Busch car Saturday.” Kenseth finished fifth in the Busch race. The key moment in Monday’s race was the two-tire pit stop near the end. “We lost a race like that in California in my rookie year by taking four tires,” Kenseth said. “We didn’t want to do that again, and we knew if some of those other guys got out ahead of us, we probably wouldn’t be able to get past them.” It was the second win of the season and the third of his career for the former NASCAR Winston Cup rookie of the year, who solidified his hold on sec ond place in the season points. it When you have a fast car, sometimes you don't want to practice too much and start making changes that might slow you down.' — Matt Kenseth Ags set to tangle with Coogs JOHN LIVAS • THE BATTALION A&M sophomore Erik Schindewolf applies the tag to an Oklahoma runner during the Aggies’ series with OU on March 24. The Aggies travel to Houston today to play the Houston Cougars. Staff and Wire Reports The Texas A&M baseball team will travel to Houston to face the Houston Cougars on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Cougar Field. After defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last Tuesday, and winning two of three games from Texas-Pan American last weekend, the Aggies (26-11) stayed at No. 16 for the third-consecutive week in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper top 25. The Aggies defeated Pan American, 6-5, in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday before dropping the nightcap, 3-2. The win marked the 750th career victory for 18th-year head coach Mark Johnson. After the teams endured a three hour and 26 minute rain delay in the first game, catcher Rusty Meyer hit his third home run of the season. In his 12 games back from injury, Meyer is hitting a team-high .388. Houston (23-10), ranked as high as No. 7 by Baseball America, enters the midweek battle after dropping two of three games to East Carolina last weekend. Tuesday’s game will be a rematch of the third game of the season where Houston edged A&M, 2-1, at the Astros College Classic at Astros Field. The pitching matchup will be identical as a pair of left handers in Kyle Parcus and Keith Whatley will toe the rubber. Parcus lasted five innings against the Cougars, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out five. For the season, Parcus is 2- 2 with a 3.15 ERA in 34 1/3 innings. Whatley earned the win and allowed just two hits while striking out four in six innings in the previous contest against the Aggies. So far this year, Whatley is 6-3 with an ERA of 4.47 in 44.1 innings of work. The Aggies lead the all-time series with Houston, 96-45-1, with the Cougars winning the last two games between the in-state rivals. Texas A&M has won seven of the last 10.
