Monday, April 8, 2002 Ags take 2 of 3 from Broncs Staff and Wire Reports The Texas A&M baseball team defeated the University of Texas-Pan American, 6-5, in the first game of a doubleheader before dropping the nightcap, 3-2, on Saturday. The win marked the 750th career victory for 18th-year head coach Mark Johnson. After A&M pitcher Khalid Ballouli retired the side in the top of the first inning of the first game, the two teams endured a three hour and 26 minute rain delay. When play continued. Rusty Meyer hit his third home run of the season off Pan Am starting pitcher Frank James (4-7) to give the Aggies the early lead, 1-0, after one inning of play. Matt Farnum earned the win, throwing five- plus innings in relief of Ballouli. Farnum surrendered five runs on nine hits while striking out four. A&M (26-11) extended its lead to 3-0 in the bot tom of the second. Matt Alexander drew a bases- loaded walk to score Ryan Wardinsky and Meyer plated Justin Pouk with an infield single. The Aggies survived a late charge from the Broncs (9-25) in the top of the seventh. After scoring four runs in the inning, Aggie reliever Logan Kensing struck out three-consecutive hit ters with the tying run at third to earn his first save of the season. In the second game. Pan American took the initial lead with an unearned run off A&M start ing pitcher Ryan Warpinski in the top of the first. A&M answered the Broncs in the bottom of the first with a run of its own when Stephenson drove in Eric Reed. The Aggie took the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the second on Tim Petru’s sixth home run of the season. Pan Am touched Warpinski for a pair of runs in the top of the sixth when Adam Farek’s two- RBI single plated Skip Weast and Tony Ortiz. Warpinski (1-2) was tagged with the loss despite tying a career high with 10 strikeouts. On Friday, Eddie Lang’s RBI single up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning scored David Evans from second base to give the Aggies a 2-1 victory over Pan Am. A&M returns to action Tuesday against Houston at 7 p.m. at Cougar Field in Houston. NEWS IN BRIEF Ags’ Pinnock wins 110-meter hurdles at Texas Relays For the third time in three years, and the fifth time in eight years, a Texas A&M athlete grabbed a men’s 110-meter hurdle title at the Texas Relays. Junior Chris Pinnock cruised to an easy win in the 110 hurdles with an NCAA automatic qualifying, wind-legal time of 13.67 at an over cast Mike A. Myers Stadium on Saturday. Derek Zachary of Nebraska finished second in 13.91. “I felt pretty good,” said Pinnock. “I had a hamstring injury here two weeks ago so it feels good to come in here an get an automatic qualifi er. Now I can just relax and train and have fun for the remainder of the (pre-conference) season.” Pinnock’s name will now rest in Texas Relays lore next to past A&M 110 champions Larry Wade, Curt Young, Bashir Ramzy and Kris Allen. The mark also places him 11th on the A&M all-time list beside Young. “He did a good job,” said A&M head coach Ted Nelson. “To come in here on a day like today and run that fast says a lot about him. He may have run a little faster had we placed him in the invitational divi sion but he’s coming off an injury and we needed a good solid race to get him going in the right direction. We thought it was the best thing for him and he proved it today.” Senior pole vaulter Erica Boren jumped an NCAA provisional-quali fying height of 12-5 1/2 in taking runner-up honors. Oregon junior Becky Holliday automatically quali fied for the NCAA Championships after grabbing the win with a meet- record-tying jump of 13-7 1/4. Sophomore Ronny Jimenez claimed third in the “A” section of the men’s shot put with a throw of 57-9 3/4. Simon Stewart of Idaho won with a toss of 61-2. Men’s tennis team takes down Tech BAUER LUBBOCK, Texas — Freshman Derrick Bauer used a third set tiebreaker to win his singles match and clinch victory for the No. 12 Texas A&M men’s tennis team over Texas Tech, 4-3, on Friday. Bauer was the only remaining Aggie on the court and beat Texas Tech's Alfonso Perez, 7- 6 (4), 3-6, 7-6 (4), at No. 6. It was the Aggies’ (15-3, 2-0 Big 12) 10th victory in their last 11 outings. “We came in expecting a tough match and obviously it was,” A&M coach Tim Cass said. “I'm proud of Derrick and how he reacted in a tight situation. All season we've had different guys step up and I thought this win was good for his confidence. Jarin Skube also came through for us in another tight match.” A&M’s Jarin Skube used a sec ond set tiebreaker to beat Tech’s Devin Wakeford, 6-4, 7-6, at No. 4. Also winning in singles was fresh man Lester Cook who defeated Richard Crabtree, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 3. In singles, the Aggies were without the services of junior Ryan Newport, who is ranked No. 34 nationally, due to injury. A&M’s Keith From was forced to retire with an injury during his singles match with No. 117-ranked Royce Ramey at No. 1. It was From’s first Big 12 loss as he falls to 1-1 in the league and to 7-6 in dual play.
