Default tours with MTV Campus Invasion,

THE BATTALION
The members of Default are
not the only new rockers to
come out of Vancouver, Canada,
but with their debut album, 7he
Fallout, and a calendar riddled
with tour dates, they are some of
the busiest.
But Default is not too busy to
make a stop in College Station.
Today it will join its partners in
rhyme — Starsailor, Injected
and Nickelback — in Reed
Arena for the fourth annual
MTV Campus Invasion tour.
Dave Benedict, bassist for
Default, said that in 1999, drum
mer Danny Craig and guitarist
Jeremy Hora had a problem.
Their band The Fallout — now
known as Default — lacked a
lead vocalist. Craig and Hora
found the answer to their prob
lem was under their noses the
whole time after hearing Dallas
Smith, who rarely sang in front
of a crowd, audition.
“(Craig and Hora) were like,
‘Where the hell has this guy
been?” Benedict said. “[Smith]
was the first and only guy they
auditioned.”
After rehearsing for a tew
months. Default recorded a
demo that fell into the hands of
fellow Canadian Chad Kroeger,
lead singer of Nickelback.
Seeing the blueprint for a suc
cessful band sprawled before
him, Kroeger helped Default
write the lyrics for several of its
songs, including the hit single
“Deny.” Kroeger, sometimes
referred to by the band as a big
brother, confidently urged the
flowering band to push forward
but before taking the next step.
Default had to find some
change to fill its empty pockets.
The “change” came in the
form of a $20,000 check, gra
ciously granted from Smith’s
father.
“[Smith’s father] is a very
supportive guy, as all of our par
ents are,” Benedict said. “As
soon as he heard the demo, he
was excited and believed in us
100 percent. He took a chance
on us and it paid off.”
By the time hit singles
“Wasting my Time” and “Deny”
were dominating airwaves and
the music video for “Wasting
my Time” was in the can, the
band had paid Smith’s father
back in full.

Have you thought
about the
salaries
California?
California already has the second-

in the nation, and new legislation is
pushing salaries even higher.

Over 85%
of California
school districts
have raised
starting teacher
salaries to the
recommended
statewide
minimum of
$34,000.
California’s teachers are treated very well.
Last year, the California public school
system began implementing a $34,000
statewide minimum salary for beginning
teachers - and some districts pay as
much as $44,000 for first-year teachers.
Higher salaries are just one of the ways California demonstrates the great
respect we have for our teachers. Other support and incentives — inside and
outside the classroom — help you develop within the profession, achieve an
advanced degree, and even purchase your first home. We’re committed to
getting you here and keeping you here.
Bring your teaching degree to California
When you consider California's great starting salaries, and then factor in the
reasonable cost-of-living in many of our cities, you'll start to realize what a significant
financial advantage you'll have when you begin your teaching career in California.
Once here, you II discover that the diversity of our student population, our cultures
and our scenery will enrich your life in ways you never imagined
We need you in California. It's easy to get here.
