But Default is not too busy to make a stop in College Station. Today it will join its partners in rhyme — Starsailor, Injected and Nickelback — in Reed Arena for the fourth annual MTV Campus Invasion tour. Dave Benedict, bassist for Default, said that in 1999, drum mer Danny Craig and guitarist Jeremy Hora had a problem. Their band The Fallout — now known as Default — lacked a lead vocalist. Craig and Hora found the answer to their prob lem was under their noses the whole time after hearing Dallas Smith, who rarely sang in front of a crowd, audition. “(Craig and Hora) were like, ‘Where the hell has this guy been?” Benedict said. “[Smith] was the first and only guy they auditioned.” After rehearsing for a tew months. Default recorded a demo that fell into the hands of fellow Canadian Chad Kroeger, lead singer of Nickelback. Seeing the blueprint for a suc cessful band sprawled before him, Kroeger helped Default write the lyrics for several of its songs, including the hit single “Deny.” Kroeger, sometimes referred to by the band as a big brother, confidently urged the flowering band to push forward but before taking the next step. Default had to find some change to fill its empty pockets. The “change” came in the form of a $20,000 check, gra ciously granted from Smith’s father. “[Smith’s father] is a very supportive guy, as all of our par ents are,” Benedict said. “As soon as he heard the demo, he was excited and believed in us 100 percent. He took a chance on us and it paid off.” By the time hit singles “Wasting my Time” and “Deny” were dominating airwaves and the music video for “Wasting my Time” was in the can, the band had paid Smith’s father back in full. ■ l L L A lombia (A1 Benedict said it istke^ded in a ilombia !!
