Melanie McFarland, concert
chair for Town Hall and a senior
computer engineering major, said
Town Hall decided to pursue the
show this year in hopes that it
would be an outstanding concert
for The 125th celebration and also
give Texas A&M hope for future
rock shows.
“The success of the show will help
prove that College Station is not just
a country town,” McFarland said.
Dave Salmon, Town Hall adviser
and major player in getting MTV to
be at the mercy of Aggies, said this
concert will hopefully put College
Station back on the map as a town
that is sought out by tour promoters.
Since 1999, endless efforts have
been made to bring a rock show to
Texas A&M University, and finally
the planets have aligned and every
thing has fallen into place.
Salmon said since the begin
ning of the pursuit for Campus
Invasion. Town Hall members have
been diligently researching groups
that students were interested in
seeing at A&M.
“With various surveys and data
collecting, it just so happened that
Nickelback was one of the top
three picks,” Salmon said. “We
were lucky enough to have Reed
Arena available and lucky enough
to have the Campus Invasion in
route through this area at the
same time.”
Salmon said in the concert busi
ness, especially at a college or uni
versity, he is often at the mercy of
the tour when it comes to the who,
when and where.
McFarland said Town Hall
offered MTV an enticing offer,
which partly included the size of
the audience for which the bands
would perform. MTV could not
refuse.
MTV has decided to add a bit of
a twist on this year’s campus inva
sion. They added an MTV2 stage,
featuring Starsailor, which will be
free to the public.
Vanessa Gill, a senior journal
ism major and disc jockey for
KANM radio station, has been try
ing to keep an objective opinion
about the MTV Campus Invasion.
“Considering I’m only really
anticipating hearing one out of the
four bands on the tour, I still think
this is a great progressive step in
the Texas A&M music scene,” Gill
said. “Although I tend to listen to
music nobody is killing on the
radio, you know, like more under
ground stuff, I know Nickelback is
one of the biggest bands out there
right now and that for them to
come to A&M is a big statement.”
The MTV Campus Invasion
activities will begin today at 1 1
a.m. at Rudder Fountain, and
Starsailor will perform outside
Reed Arena at 5:30 p.m. Tickets
are still available at Reed Arena and
the MSC Box Office.
