SPORTS THE BATTALION Wednesday, April 3, 2002 Perry’s touchdown highlights scrimmage True Brown The Texas A&M football team completed its second practice of the week in full pads Tuesday. A&M practiced for just over two hours, ending practice with a scrimmage. Seven players were not cleared to practice Tuesday and were limited to conditioning. Keelan Jackson, hamstring; Kasey Cheshier, quadriceps; Alan Reuber, hamstring; Dwain Goynes, ankle; Adam Black, back; Eric Crutchfield, shoul der and Kevin Mangum, quadriceps, all sat out. Starting offensive tackle Andre Brooks was carted out near the end of practice. “He’s been pretty sick,” said football head coach R.C. Slocum. “He tried to push through (the entire workout) and got most of practice in.” Scrimmage report At the end of practice, the Aggies conducted a spirited goal-line situation scrimmage, pitting the first team offense against the first team defense and the second team offense against the second team defense. A&M’s offense looked solid against the Wrecking Crew, scoring touchdowns on its first two plays. The first touchdown was a strike from quarterback Mark Farris to running back Oschlor Flemming in the right side of the end zone. Farris also threw a touch down pass to fullback Stacy Jones later in the scrimmage. Running back Joe Weber cashed in on the next play, plunging up the middle from three yards out for the touch down. Weber finished the scrimmage with three touch downs, including a head-first dive over the pile from one yard out. The play of the day, how ever, belonged to junior trans fer Thomas Perry. Perry, orig inally on the 12th Man roster as a linebacker, switched to fullback earlier this week. Perry is the grandson of Heisman Trophy winner John David Crow, who played for A&M from 1955-57. With Crow watching the Aggies’ scrimmage. Perry took a handoff on a 2nd-and-goal play from the two yard line in for the touchdown. “That was a good scrim mage,” Slocum said. “We did a little goal line stuff down there, and I thought both sides competed well.” Sheets pitches past Astros in season opener, 9-3 HOUSTON (AP) — The name Enron was gone from the ballpark. As far as the Houston Astros were concerned, hitting and pitching were missing, too. Ben Sheets struck out a career-high eight, and Richie Sexson, Tyler Houston and Jose Hernandez drove in two runs each Tuesday to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a season-opening 9-3 win over the Houston Astros. “Ben was overpowering,” Brewers manager Davey Lopes said. “His fastball was clocked at 97. He came out firing in the first inning. He was pumped tonight. It usually takes him three or four innings to get going.” Sheets, a member of the gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic team two years ago, allowed two runs and nine hits in six innings and walked none. Last April 5, Sheets lost to Houston in his major league debut. “There were opening day jitters, but our guys came out and banged them early,” Sheets said. “I’m pleased with the way things went. I went six innings and I still felt strong. I didn’t want to burn up the bullpen in the first week.” The game was the first one at the stadium since it was renamed. Following the collapse of Enron, the NL Central champions bought back naming rights to their ballpark from the bankrupt energy compa ny. The downtown stadium was known as Enron Field during its first two seasons, but it is Astros Field now — until the team finalizes a new nam ing rights deal. Wade Miller, who won his final seven deci sions last season and had been 7-0 against Milwaukee, made his first opening day start Offense Continued from page 7 The Aggies are hoping to subdue their rivals at home and improve their conference standings, and they know they cannot let their emotions get in the way. “We have to make sure to approach this and left in the fifth inning after consecutive homers by Sexson and Geoff Jenkins. Alex Ochoa also homered for the Brewers, in the eighth off Scott Linebrink. “I think Wade’s adrenaline was pretty heavy,” new Astros manager Jimy Williams said. “His breaking ball was getting away from him. I think that was just the excitement of opening day.” Miller allowed three or fewer earned runs in 23 of his 32 starts last season but he equaled that in the first inning. He hit the first two batters, threw a wild pitch, gave up a one-out RBI single to Sexson and a two-run double to Houston. “I think I was anxious and not really calm,” Miller said. “I hope this isn’t an ongoing thing with people saying ‘Oh, God, he pitched opening day and he didn't do well.’ I think it’s just one of those things.” Adam Everett, an Olympic teammate of Sheets, hit an RBI single in the second, but Hernandez hit a two-run double in the third to make it 5-1. Miller allowed seven runs and seven hits in four-plus innings. “We had our chances to score and we didn’t,” Williams said. “We had the right people up, it just didn’t work today. You have to give some credit to their hitters. And, Sheets pitched well. He made his pitches when he had to.” The Brewers’ batters made it easy for Sheets. “This year, we have more options, we have more different ways to go,” Jenkins said. ‘‘Last year it seemed like we were always playing for the three-run home run. This year we have more contact hitters who can put the ball in play.” game just like every other game,” Evans said. “We can’t get too emotionally charged about the rivalry. There will be that extra excitement there because it’s Texas, but we just have to focus and play ball.” First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Aggie Softball Complex, with Slataper taking the mound for A&M against Osterman for UT. three rolveff* om aes not inv< undraismg all today!
