By Doug Puentes THE BATTALION The Texas A&M baseball team contin ued its stretch of games against non-confer ence opponents by going through the motions in a 9-1 victory over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Tuesday at Olsen Field. The 16th-ranked Aggies took advantage of less-than-stellar pitching by the Islanders to take an early lead which they held all game. “It’s kind of hard to get an offense going when the strikes aren’t there and the pitch er is almost comfortably wild,” said A&M head coach Mark Johnson. “I was pleased though. It was kind of an uneventful thing but it was a win.” After a sluggish start, the A&M offense got going as every starter except catcher Rusty Meyer recorded a hit. Islanders starter Danny Luna, who entered the game with a 19.41 ERA, spot ted .the Aggies (24-10) two runs in the first due to his wildness. Luna (1-2) issued two-out walks to Neal Stephenson and Rusty Meyer, then gave up a RBI single to David Evans. Luna then hit Travis Wong and Ty Garner on consecutive pitches to drive in another run. Luna was replaced when he walked Erik Schindewolf to lead off the second inning, but his replacement, Scott Clements, did not fare much better. Clements retired the first batter he faced, then gave up a two-run home run to Matt Alexander to give the Aggies four runs on two hits through two innings. The Aggies were stuck on two hits until the fifth inning when they erupted for three runs on five hits, thanks to RBI singles by Evans, Garner and Tim Petru. The runs were enough as the A&M pitchers held the Islanders (13-20) in check. A&M-Corpus Christi managed 10 hits but could only muster one run in the third inning. A&M starter Kyle Parcus (2-2) was effective, allowing only the one run on six hits and strking out four in five innings. A&M relievers Ryan Warpinski, Todd Deininger and Logan Kensing combined to allow only four hits and strike out five in their four innings of work. The victory stretched the Aggies win ning streak to five games, the last four com ing against non-conference foes. j/kggie bats. Longhorn pitching set for battle By Micala Proesch THE BATTALION The Texas A&M softball earn will host the red-hot university of Texas Longhorns Wednesday night. The No. 23 Longhorns (32-9, 5-0 Big 12) are riding a seven- game winning streak into the matchup against the Aggies, which includes wins over con ference foes Baylor, Kansas and Missouri. UT is off to its best Big 12 start in school history and already has equalled the number of conference wins it post ed last season. The Longhorns are led by freshman pitch ing powerhouse Cat Osterman, who has thrown two perfect games this season, with the most recent coming COLLINS against Baylor. She boasts a 1.10 ERA and has recorded 331 strikeouts this season. The No. 22 Aggies (28-8, 2-3 Big 12) are batting .273 on the season, but will have to step up their offen sive production against Osterman, who is widely regarded as one of the top pitchers in the nation. “The team hit the ball well this past weekend, and we are feeling confident both offen sively and defensively,” said A&M head coach Jo Evans. “But they have got one of the best pitchers in the country in Cat Osterman, so we know it’s going to be a great game.” A&M has won its past four games, including a two-game sweep of Iowa State last week end. The Aggies played error less ball behind sophomore pitchers Jessica Slataper and Lindsey Wilhelmson to secure the victories. A&M also produced offen sively, led by junior catcher Selena Collins, who went 4-for-4 on Sunday, bringing her batting average up to a team-leading .359 and her home run count to nine. See Offense on page 9 SPORTS IN BRIEF Aggie catcher earns award Texas A&M junior catcher Selena Collins was named the Big 12's Hitter of the Week on Tuesday. Collins hit a team-high .667 to go with a 1.250 slug ging percentage and six RBIs. Collins highlighted the week with a 4-for-4 per formance against Iowa State last weekend. In the series-closer against the Cyclones, Collins earned three RBIs and hit a home run. Earlier in the week, she posted two hits in a 5-0 win over Northwestern State. The award was the first for an Aggie softball player this season. University of Texas pitcher Cat Osterman earned her fourth Big 12 Pitcher of the Week award after throwing her second perfect game of the season. Baseball adds game to schedule The No. 16 Texas A&M baseball team will play Southwest Texas State on Wednesday, April 17, head coach Mark Johnson announced Tuesday. The game will take place at 7 p.m. at Olsen Field. The slot opened last week end when A&M had a game with Centenary canceled.
