Blood shortage solution WASHINGTON (AP) — The blood bank in Las Vegas pulled in 7,700 extra donations last year without having to recruit extra donors — at a time when other parts of the country had shortages. The trick: technology that lets one person give the amount of red blood cells normally got ten from two people, without feeling woozy afterward. Call it double-blood dona tion, a small but growing trend that blood bankers hope will boost the nation's tight supply — a supply many warn is likely to get even tighter with new restrictions on who can donate. “We saw the writing on the wall because of the shrinking donor base and said, ‘We have to do this now,’” says Jan Dalby of United Blood Services, Las Vegas, where double-blood col lections are steadily rising. Typical donations have not changed much in decades: A nurse sticks a needle in your arm and fills a bag with whole blood. The blood is shipped to a lab to be separated into different com ponents — red blood cells, platelets and plasma — used for different treatments. Red blood cells make up the typical transfusion; several thou sand gallons a day are used. Ensuring that supply is a chal lenge. Only about 5 percent of people eligible to donate blood One donor, double the red blood cells New technology allows for twice the amount of red blood cells to be collected from one donor. The machine uses a series of motors and clamps to stop, sort, and return portions of blood to a donor. The process takes 35 to 45 minutes and it is painless. 1. Extracted: Blood is mixed with an anticoagulant to prevent clotting. 2. Separated: A centrifuge container is filled and spun at a high speed to separate out the red blood cells. Plasma 3. Stored: Plasma, the liquid part of blood, is temporarily stored in one bag. Red blood cells are kept in another bag for donation. 4. Returned: The centrifuge then spins in the opposite direction, pulling the plasma back through the machine and into the body. The process is repeated for the second unit of red blood cells. SOURCE: Haemonetics Corp. do so, and increasingly strict safety rules limit who can donate. Meanwhile, demand for blood is rising and periodic shortages force hospitals to can cel elective surgeries. You cannot donate more than about a pint of whole blood at a time. But the new trend: Hook donors to a machine that sepa rates blood on the spot, keeping the red cells and putting the rest back into their bodies right away. Because only part of the blood is taken, banks can collect twice the red cells — totaling about a pint — from a single donor who doesn't feel the loss. NEWS IN BRIEF French scientists clone rabbits (AP) — French scientists say they have suc cessfully cloned rabbits from adult cells for the first time. The team produced six clones, and four devel oped normally with two dying. Two of the cloned offspring were later mated naturally, resulting in separate litters of seven and eight bunnies. Scientists reported their results in the April issue of the journal Nature Biotechnology. The team was based at France's National Institute for Agriculture Research in Jouy-en-Josas. To create the clones, the team removed the nucleus from one female's egg and fused it elec trically with another adult rabbit's cumulus cell. read the fine print.
