Former softball coach gets
20 years for sex with teen
WACO, (AP) — A former Lake Air Little League
softball coach who had sexual contact with-a play
er has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Carlos Cotto, 38, avoided trial Monday by
pleading guilty to seven counts of sexual
assault and two counts of indecency with a
child. The victims were a 14-year-old girl and a
15-year-old girl, according to records.
Judge George Allen sentenced Cotto, a former
security guard at Waco Regional Airport, to nine
concurrent 20-year prison terms.
Cotto, who was fired from his city of Waco job
after his April arrest, was accused of taking one
teenager to the airport while he was on duty, giv
ing her marijuana and alcohol and having sexual
contact with her. The second indictment alleged
that he had sex with another teenager at his
home and in his vehicle.
Man found guilty in stabbing
death of his grandmother
SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A man convicted of killing
his grandmother by stabbing her 73 times was sen
tenced to 45 years in prison Tuesday.
Michael Morris Jr. could have received five to 99
years in prison for the stabbing death, but jurors bal
anced the brutality of the crime with evidence of a
difficult childhood and his lack of a prior record.
Jurors deliberated more than five hours Monday
before finding Morris, 24, guilty of stabbing Mildred
Morris, 73, in July in her modest Castle Hills home,
Her nude body was discovered the next day under
neath her mattress.
"I can’t explain why someone would kill their
grandmother," prosecutor Jim Wheat said Monday,
In one of many conflicting interviews. Morris told
police that he stumbled across his grandmother's
body during a visit to her home but did not report it
because he was “freaked out."
