impressive winning, 6-2, 6-2, over the Hawkeyes’ Steffi Hoch.
After suffering a tough loss on Sunday, Karlikova was excited
to get the win Wednesday night.
“[Karlikova] played very well tonight,” Kleinecke said.
“She played well last week but came up just short. It was nice
for her to play well and get the win.”
“I started the match off well,” Karlikova said. “Toward the
end [Hoch] played well and it was a tough finish, but I was
glad to get the win.”
Nedorostova, Hedberg and Spencer also won their matches
to give the Aggies the 6-1 win.
The one loss came on court No. 3 as Terburgh dropped
her match to Iowa sophomore Cassie Haas, who trans
ferred from A&M to be closer to her family in Iowa. Haas
was the recipient of the Aggie Heart Award in her lone
season at A&M.
Haas said that even though it was just another match, it was
still very important to her to play at A&M again.
“I’ve been thinking about this all year,” Haas said. “I have
been looking at this match on the schedule and to get the win
here was huge. It was great to be back in Aggieland and see all
of my friends.”
“I was pleased with how well [Haas] played,” said Iowa head
coach Paul Wardlaw. “[Haas] had a nice homecoming tonight
and she was one reason we scheduled this match with A&M.”
The Aggies next home match will be at 6 p.m. Friday at the
Varsity Tennis Center against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.
Yankees
Continued from page IB
“We have to compete against
them, and I’m sure we will.
But there isn’t a team that has
the resources to compete with
the Yankees.”
Of course, that did not
stop the San Francisco
Giants from spending $90
million to keep home run
king Barry Bonds. His
beyond-belief 73 homers, by
the way, were nearly as hard
to fathom as his kooky feud
with Sammy Sosa.
The wild-card St. Louis
Cardinals spent freely, sign
ing Tino Martinez and Jason
Isringhausen. AL MVP
Ichiro Suzuki and the
record-breaking Seattle
Mariners also improved
themselves, picking up Jeff
Cirillo.
Oakland and Houston,
which now plays at Astros
Field rather than Enron Field,
both boast outstanding young
pitching that put them in the
playoffs last year.
AL Central champion
Cleveland can count on its
young ace, Bartolo Colon —
wait a second, he is 28
instead of 26 after getting
caught in an age discrepancy.
No matter, he will start for
the Indians in this year’s
major league opener March
31 at Anaheim.
And do not forget the cur
rent kings of the hill. World
Series co-MVPs Randy
Johnson and Curt Schilling
and their Diamondbacks.
At 38, Johnson is coming
off a season in which he beat
out Schilling for his fourth Cy
Young Award.
“My age is the age that I
am and I’m pitching the way
I am,” the Big Unit said.
“There’s no rhyme nor rea
son except that I’ve worked
extremely hard and I take a
lot of pride in what I do.”
One thing the players and
owners definitely must do:
reach a labor agreement to
avoid yet another devastating
strike or lockout.
So far, no deal. Certainly
not after management tried to
get rid of the Expos and
Minnesota Twins in
November, while the glow of
a glorious World Series was
still bright.
And it was not a good sign
when Paul Beeston, the
game’s chief operating offi
cer and a person the players
trusted, recently resigned.
“There has been a step
backward since June,” said
Gene Orza, the No. 2 official
at the players’ union. “I think
it’s in large measure why
Paul’s not with us anymore.”
Dynamic duo
The combination of aces Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling were
the top pitchers in the National League last season.

Artful Dodgers
How Koufax and Drysdale fared in 1965, the year the Dodgers
defeated Minnesota for the World Championship.

Well-armed
Not since Sandy Koufax
and Don Drysdale of the
Los Angeles Dodgers have a
lefty and a righty on the same
staff dominated opponents
the way Randy Johnson
and Curt Schilling
last season for the
World Champion
Arizona
Diamondbacks.
