He received a doctorate in dramatic arts from the
University of California-Santa Barbara in 1974.
Herman has been provost and vice chancellor
for academic affairs at the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign since 1998. The school
boasts his extensive science, mathematics and
education policy experience on various advisory
committees and his work to create governmpnt-
university-industry partnerships for research.
He holds a bachelor’s degree from the
Stevens Institute of Technology and a doctorate
in mathematics from the University of
Maryland.
Gramm, a former economics professor at
A&M, is retiring from the Senate this year and
was widely rumored to want the University’s top
job. His wife, Wendy, currently serves on the
A&M Board of Regents. Search committee mem
bers would not say whether Gramm had applied.
Dr. Jerry Gaston, a non-voting member of the
committee and A&M system deputy chancellor,
said the committee had a list of attributes to con
sider, including appreciation of the traditions of
A&M and someone who would continue real
