Journalist
Continued from page 1A
media was failing at its job to
provide objective and accurate
reports of events.
“An advocate journalist is a
propagandist,” Wiley said.
“They try to influence you so
you will support the people
and causes they support. In
major TV, radio and newspa
pers there is advocacy journal
ism at every turn.”
Wiley said the educational
system is part of the problem of
why journalists are losing their
objectivity. He made the point
that knowledge and experience
are essential for reporters to be
good at their jobs.
“Advocacy journalists cover
the news so that they change
the image of reality," Wiley
said. “If you manipulate news,
you change history.”
Wiley said much of the his
tory students are taught today is
factually wrong because the
media covered it wrong when it
happened.
“We have a failing society.”
Wiley said. “Young people are
not being taught things by
adults. When you have an uned
ucated public, it makes it easier
to manipulate people.”
Wiley also said thul society /’s
“barraged by misinformation.”
Wiley said journalists
should not glorify themselves.
It is the journalists' job to give
the public facts, not opinions.
Journalists should gain
knowledge to do their job
right, he said.
“We have reporters who
don’t know how to write or
spell in some cases. Get knowl
edge if you're going to be a
reporter or anything else,”
Wiley said.
