Texas (18-8, 9-6 Big 12) burned the A&M defense for 16 fast-break points and dominat ed the Aggies in the paint, hit ting 20 baskets from inside. A&M’s only lead came 17 seconds into the game after senior guard LaToya Rose hit a jump shot. The Aggies’ advan tage lasted all of six seconds as the Longhorns went on a 13-2 run and never came close to trailing again. “This was one of our best efforts from beginning to end,” said UT head coach Jody Conradt. “We were ready to play, and we took care of our business from beginning to end. We played with intensity and effort, and we look like a team that is approaching being play off-ready.” UT’s win allowed it to avoid a season sweep to the Aggies (13-14, 5-10), who upset the No. 14 Longhorns in College Station on Feb. 2, 70-65. A&M’s full-court press forced 23 turnovers in the win, but the Longhorns yielded only nine to the Aggies on Saturday. UT cashed in on a solid afternoon from its bench, get ting 35 points from its reserves. “I don’t think our defense showed up tonight,” said A&M head coach Peggy Gillom. “That’s not to take anything away from Texas. They were on all cylinders from the tip. Their level of intensity from the first player to the last player on the team was up. They played well.” UT seemed to score.at will against the Aggies, hitting 48.6 percent from the floor, includ ing 7-of-ll on 3-pointers. Every player who went into the game for the Longhorns scored, and the 91 points for UT was its highest output of the season. Schreiber scored 13 of her 16 points in the first half as the Longhorns led 42-20 at the end of the first period. A 3-pointer by sophomore guard Toccara Williams cut UT’s . lead to 17 two minutes into the second half, but that was as close as A&M got to Texas. The Longhorns needed only five minutes to stretch their lead to 26 points, some thing UT failed to do when it lost in College Station after leading for most of the game. “During halftime we talked about the first four minutes of the second half being really important,” Conradt said. “I think we can defend pretty well. It is what we do best, and our team has taken some pride in that. We make the other teams work hard for their points.” Senior forward Celeria Washington scored 16 points for the Aggies, and junior for ward Meg Banahan added 15. A&M will wrap up its sea son Wednesday at Reed Arena against Oklahoma State. Mavs new look working so far DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Mavericks do not want to make too much out of one game. No matter how promising it was. Just two days after their latest blockbuster trade, the Mavericks beat the league-leading Sacramento Kings 111-97 Saturday, with new comers Raef LaFrentz and Nick Van Exel con tributing significantly after only one practice. “We were very good, and you can see some of the pieces that we didn't have before,” Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. “We have four new guys, and it is going to take a while. I don’t want to get too excited.” Nelson made the seven-player swap with the Nuggets right before the trading deadline in hopes of making his team better for the postseason. The first test came against the Kings (40-15), who lead the two-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers in the Pacific Division. Avery Johnson and Tariq Abdul-Wahad, the other players who came from Denver in Thursday’s deal, also played against the Kings, but their roles were limited. And probably will remain that way. LaFrentz and Van Exel, meanwhile, jumped right into the fray with the Mavericks' trio of All- Stars: Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Finley. The newcomers had an impact, even though they had to keep asking their teammates about the plays being called. “It will probably take a couple of weeks and a few more games, because I know I was confused out there,” Van Exel said. Nelson simplified the playcalling, sticking to a handful of plays LaFrentz and Van Exel picked up in their lone practice. “We will get better and better as the practices go by and we learn to play together,” Nelson said. Van Exel had eight points and eight assists in 30 minutes. One assist came in the closing min utes, when he gave up an easy layup and passed to Finley, who was wide open for a 3-pointer. Aggies Continued from page 7 Aggie sophomore Matt Rose captured his first gold medal of the meet in a time of 43.71. After being out-touched by .03 in the 50-yard freestyle on Thursday by Texas sopho more Ian Crocker, Rose had revenge by beating Crocker in the 100. - “It felt great,” Rose said. “Especially in that heat which was six Longhorns and two Aggies. Just to be on top of the podium was great.” A&M will host the Sectional Championships Feb. 28-March 3 at the Student Recreation Center Natatorium. Classic Continued from page 7 eleven batters he faced before running into a bit of trouble in the ninth. With two outs, Deininger gave up a single and hit a batter to bring the game-win ning run to the plate. Deininger closed it out however, getting Garrett Alwert to pop out, ending the game. Deininger finished the game pitching four innings, giving up only one hit and striking out four. “I’ve been struggling for a while now,” Deininger said. “I knew I’d get my chance because in the tour nament you pretty much pitch everybody. I just want ed to come out and do good, keep the ball down and throw strikes.” The Aggies conclude the tournament with two games starting at 5 p.m. against Pepperdine and another at 8 p.m. against Kentucky. Johnson said the probable starters for tomorrow are sophomore Ryan Warpinski and junior Stephen Ponder, with junior Zach Dixon and sophomore Robert Ramsey likely getting some action as well.
