NEWS IN BRIEF
New Mexico plane
crash kills one
FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - A
single-engine plane crash-landed
Tuesday just short of a runway at
Four Corners Regional Airport,
killing one of the two men aboard.
Passenger Jim Harrell, 53, of
Canyon. Texas, died in the emer
gency room of San Juan Regional
Medical Center, said Farmington
Fire Chief Tom Aurnhammer.
The pilot, Kevin Phillips, 40, of
Amarillo, Texas, was in critical con
dition Tuesday, hospital spokes
woman Rhonda Schaefer said.
Aurnhammer said the two men
suffered “multiple traumatic
injuries” in the crash of the
Cessna Cardinal 177 shortly after
10 a.m. Tuesday.
It took rescue workers about a
half hour to remove the men from
the wreckage, then they used
high-angle ropes to move the gur
neys up the bluff one at a time to
the airport, authorities said.
The plane fell short of the run
way as it approached the airport,
which sits on top of a bluff,
authorities said. The plane
crashed about 10 feet to 15 feet
from the top of the bluff.
“Our airport is somewhat ele
vated on a mesa. ... It hit the lip
of the mesa” as it came in for a
landing, Farmington police Sgt.
Brian McAchran said.
The flight originated from the
Tradewinds Airport near Amarillo,
airport general manager Les
Byram said.
