Dr. Richard Ewing, vice president for
research at Texas A&M, was appointed
by Texas Gov. Rick Perry to the Texas
Council on Environmental Technology,
a group tasked with fostering and evalu
ating new technologies in the fight
against air and water pollution.
The council, composed of 11 members
representing the state’s major universi
ties, was formed to help Texas comply
with federal Clean Air Act requirements.
“I look forward to being involved
with this group as a researcher who has
personally worked on environmental
problems as well as an administrator
with oversight responsibilities,” Ewing
said. “ It is good that the state is serious
about addressing these issues that
impact the health of our citizens.”
The council will also engage in fed
erally funded technology transfer initia
tives, recommending the initiation of
specific air/water pollution research
projects, and will work closely with
other organizations such as the
Department of Education and the Texas
Natural Resource and Conservative
Commission.
“We met in early January for the first
time. This meeting was for introductions
among the members and to discuss plans
for the council,” Ewing said. “We have
our work cut out for us. I am confident
the council will be able to accomplish a
lot in this arena for the state.”

Texas A&M’s meat and poultry sci
ence programs were ranked No. 1
among the nation’s top 10 universities
in 2001 by Meat & Poultry Magazine, a
business journal for the meat and poul
try industries.
The journal, published out of Kansas
City, Mo., ranked the nation’s universities
by conducting surveys of professionals in
the industry to see how each university is
perceived in the business community.
Texas A&M’s reputation in research,
teaching and extension is what put them
into the number one spot, according to
an article that released the rankings in
the November issue of Meat & Poultry.
“The Aggie reputation is rock solid in
all three disciplines,” the article reads.
“Faculty and students are consistently
working with professionals in the meat
and poultry industry and are active in
industry associations and well known in
research circles.”
The article states that A&M offers
well-rounded programs in meat, poul
try and food science, programs that few
schools can rival.
Chuck Jolley, publisher for Meat &
Poultry, said in addition to talking with
professionals in the industry, the maga
zine asked professors at major universi
ties what they thought was most impor
tant to building a top-ranked meat sci
ence department.
“They (professors) told us to look at
the quality of the teaching staff, the size
of the department and its history of turn
ing out well-trained, talented students,”
Jolley said.
Texas A&M’s faculty along with
their research are what put the school in
the leading position, Jolley said.
“The quality of the teaching staff as
well as the quality of the research done
at Texas A&M gave them the nod,”
Jolley said.
Dr. Jeff Saveli, the meat science sec
tion leader in the Department of Animal
Science at A&M, said the spirit of the
faculty and students is what has given
A&M a strong reputation in producing
qualified graduates.
“Our faculty loves to teach,” Saveli
said, “and we have great students who
understand work and loyalty. That is
what made this ranking occur.”
