BCS nothing but trouble to NCAA
T he Bowl Championship Series was intro
duced to college football in 1998 as the
NCAA’s solution to problems surround
ing the national championship. The NCAA’s
problem-solver will turn
into a joke this season if
Louisiana State upsets No.
2 Tennessee in the
Southeastern Conference’s
Championship g^rne
Saturday.
The NCAA should
scrap the entire BCS sys-
tern immediately, and
solve the debacle with a championship play
off system.
If LSU upsets the Volunteers, the No. 3
Nebraska Cornhuskers will slide into the No.
2 spot, and play for the national championship
in the Rose Bowl against No. 1 Miami.
BCS officials will have plenty to explain if
Tennessee falls in the SEC championship
BCS officials will have plenty
to explain if Tennessee falls in
the SEC championship game.
game, because Nebraska, a team that was not
the best team in its conference, will be named
national champions with a win against Miami.
Division II and Division III football
championships are decided in a playoff sys
tem, leaving no doubt who is the best team
in each respective division.
Division 1 schedules are full of holes,
with most teams playing 12 games between
late August and late November. Teams also
usually have two to three off weeks during
the season, which easily could be done away
with to free up weekends for playoff action.
The playoff system would crown a cham
pion in just five rounds if 16 teams are
allowed in the championship tournament, and
with a shortened schedule, champions would
still be crowned around New Year’s Day.
