Student workers are needed to keep things running smoothly. Students work at various jobs on campus, from driving shuttle buses to serving hot cups of java to caffeine-addicted students. Veronica Garreton, a sopho more architecture major, understands the importance of student jobs. “I work at Poor Yorick’s and make coffee — a lot of coffee.” Garreton said, Garreton said she spends about 15 hours a week prepar ing coffee and keeping Poor Yorick’s clean. She said the best things about being a stu dent worker are not having to work weekends and interacting with customers. ‘‘The people that work here, and the people that come in, they’re just really nice,” Garreton said. “You start to recognize people after a while; they’re really grateful to get their coffee in the morning.” Students demand other serv ices as well —especially when it comes to the perpetual quest for parking spaces. Sonia Valdez, a junior community health major and John J. Koldus Building parking garage attendant, said her job includes working as a cashier and training new employees. “It’s easy and 1 get to study while I work, and it pays pretty well,” Valdez said. “There’s nothing too interesting about it, (but) it pays the bills.” Valdez’s job sounds simple enough; however, she said free parking on weeknights for stu dents with blue commuter parking passes and the University Center activities make nights busy. She also said cashiers have little power over parking garage policies. “We don’t have much con trol over things,” she said. “The machine tells us what time it is and tells us how much to charge. We just try to do our job like anyone else." While jobs like Valdez's are ntwrt jJear ATM!
