Ags take on Long Beach GUY ROGERS * THE BATTALION Sophomore guard Michael Gardener and the Aggies will host Long Beach State at 8 p.m. tonight at Reed Arena By Brian Ruff THE BATTALION The Texas A&M men’s bas ketball team looks to continue its winning ways Friday night, when the Aggies (3-0) take on the Long Beach State 49ers at Reed Arena. A&M comes into the game on the heels of a 91-70 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville Monday night. The Aggies struggled in the first half against the Javeli- nas, but dominated the second half of play, scoring 60 points to tally their third win of the young season. Junior forward Keith Bean scored 14 points in a four minute span to lead the Aggies over the Javelinas. Bean finished the game with 20 points. “I am pleased with the effort that we nave gotten thus far,” said A&M men’s basketball head coach Melvin Watkins. “We still have a lot of work to do and our challenges are going to get a lot greater.” The 49ers (3-2) are coming off a 81-46 win over Cal State- Monterey Bay in Long Beach on Monday. Long Beach is led by senior center Rudy Williams, who leads the team, averaging 14.4 points per game. The Aggies suffered-a 83-76 loss to the 49ers in Long Beach last season. A&M blew a 16-point lead in the second half to give Long Beach State the victory in die two teams’ first meeting. Junior guard Bernard King leads the Aggies in the 2001- 2002 season, averaging 21 points per game and also is among the league leaders in assists, averag ing 5.7 per game. King needs to hit just two more 3-pointers to become A&M’s career leader in three-point field goals despite playing in just 62 games. “He (King) is now able to take better shots,” Watkins said. “Having the depth, that has allowed him not to force it as much. If he can continue to take better shots, he is defi nitely capable of putting the ball into the basket.” The matchup against Long Beach State is die second of a five- game homestand for die Aggies. “We are still in our infant stages of trying to develop a chemistry and develop a lot of confidence every time we step on the floor,” Watkins said. “Wlien you have these home ames, you need to protect the ome court. It is going to be very important to get some wins in these games here.” Tipoff against the 49ers is set for 8 p.m. NCAA ~ Continued from Page 7 University. A&M has won 1 1 of its last 13 matches and has not lost a home match since a 3-1 loss to Nebraska on Oct. 14. The Aggies’ opponent on Friday, UTA, also enters the tour nament on a hot streak. The Mavericks have won six straight and 17 of their last 18 matches, including knocking off the first and second seeds in the Southland Conference tournament. “They’re [A&M] accustomed to the situation,” said Mavericks coach Janine Smith. “This is the first time for our team, not to mention that we’re young by starting three freshmen. I think those are the two keys. When our team plays defense, we tend to get on a roll.” In the early first-round match on Friday, Texas faces off against American East confer ence champion Northeastern University at 5 p.m. The Longhorns (16-13) are making their 19th appearance in the tournament and return after missing last season’s tourna ment. In contrast, the Huskies (23-10) are making their first appearance in the tournament. If the Aggies and Longhorns win their first-round matches, they will face each other in the second round with a trip to the Sweet Sixteen on the line. Although A&M has defeated Texas twice this season, Corbelli is not exactly chalking up a win should the teams meet in the second round. “Have I lost sleep over it?” Corbelli said. “Yeah. But I’ve decided that I just need to trust my team. They know what they want and they know how to beat Texas and win that match should it happen.” The winners of the first round games will meet in the second round on Saturday at 7 p.m. at G. Rollie White Coliseum. SPORTS IN BRIEF Aggie women take on Quinnipiac The Texas A&M women's basketball team will travel to Providence, R.l. to play in the Brown Classic. The Aggies (2-2) will take on Quinnipiac at 2 p.m. A&M is coming off a 54- 50 loss in the championship game of the Aggie Women's Basketball Classic on Nov. 25. Equestrian team travels to Stillwater The Texas A&M English equestrian team will travel to Stillwater, Okla. this weekend to take on the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. The Aggies will be back into action for the first time since Nov. 19 when the team defeated West Texas A&M Aggie Decorated: • T-shirts • Longsleeve T-shirts • Sweatshirts • Henleys • Youth T-shirts • Youth Sweatshirts • Toddler T-shirts • Toddler Sweatshirts) • Golf Shirts • Hats • Bags and More...
