AGGIELAND Texas A&M University Yearbook • 100 Years of Excellence Sports Page 3B JL THE BATTALION Tuesday, November 20, 2001 Aggies claim opener, 87-63 By Doug Puentes THE BATTALION For his first two seasons in College Station, A&M ju nior Bernard King has carried die load for the Texas A&M men’s basketball team. If Monday night’s game against George Washington was any indication, King might be able to pass on some of that weight to his teammates. King led the Aggies with 18 points and eight assists on Monday, but was aided by two other Aggies in double dig its as A&M opened its season by defeating George Wash ington, 87-63, in front of4,420 fans at Reed Arena. In addition to King, sophomore forward Nick Ander son chipped in 14 points and junior forward Keith Bean added 11 points and seven rebounds. “Last year, we really only had six healthy players,” King said. “We have better players this year. Last year, they could focus more on me and stop us. This year, you have to stop me and eight other guys. Last season, the Colonials defeated the Aggies, 94-74, in their season opener. This time around was totally different. A&M shot 51.7 percent from the field, includmg 50 per cent from three-point range as 14 of the 15 A&M players on the roster were victorious in a season opener for the first time. “This was a great start for us,” said A&M head coach Melvin Watkins. “We have so many kids that have been through the rough times, hopefully we’ve committed ourselves See Opener on page 6B. GUY ROGERS • THE BATTALION Junior guard Bernard King heads down court after stealing the ball from George Washington’s Greg Collucci Monday night at Reed Arena. "Body piercing saved my life."' Not a pierced ear, nose, navel or tongue ... but pierced hands and feet. And not as a fashion statement ... but as a sacrifice for you and me. Nearly 2000 years ago, Jesus Christ was brutally nailed to a cross-crucified. Why did he suffer? Why did he die such a cruel death? So we wouldn’t have to. Because he loves us. “But he was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The punishment that brought us peace was upon him, And by his wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5 (New International Version) And now here’s the real good news: he’s alive today! God is reaching out to people through His son, Jesus Christ. To find out more about God’s relevance in your life. We encourage you to read this free article by Josh McDowell: Does Christianity Work? www.leaderu.com/everystudent/josh/josh.html % FACULTY FRIENDS John 3:16 states “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” We are a group of professors, instructors, lecturers, and administrators united by their common experience that Jesus Christ provides intellectually and spiritually satisfying answers to life’s most important questions.
