I 1 terrorist attacks. Bush spoke about his per sonal loss during the war and his feelings after his plane was shot down. He said he had a ticket home, “to be relieved of his duties after being shot down.” But instead he rejoined his ship because his duty to serve the country came first. Bush said. “Our duties and freedom is what it means to be an American,” Bush said. “Since Sept. 1 1, the World War II lega cy is alive and well.” Bush said Americans are seeing the nation united like it was after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He has designed a mon ument in Connecticut, a monument at Yankee Stadium and a firefighters’ memorial in New York City. The monument’s base will be made of pol ished Texas granite, the same material used for the fountain at the George Bush Library. The base, which is at an angle, represents the different branches of the armed forces, Romei said. Almost $320,000 of the $500,000 required to build the monument has been raised. A recent fundraising event aided by Texas A&M System Chancellor Howard D. Graves raised $120,000 in one night. The remainder of the park will consist of 13 soccer fields, 10 baseball fields and two pavil ions, one named for Texas and the other named for the United States. Guests at the groundbreaking included Mayor Lynn Mcllhaney of College Station and Mayor Jay Don Watson of Bryan. The keynote speaker was Dr. Frank Vandiver, who recounted a brief history of America’s wars. The monument is expected to be completed next November.
