THE BATTALION
The Big 12 tournament champion
Texas A&M soccer team will host No.
10 University of Texas-Austin, Southern
Methodist University and Southwest
Texas State University this weekend at
the Aggie Soccer Complex for the first
and second rounds of the 2001 NCAA
Women’s Soccer Championship.

at home.
— G. Guerrieri
A&M soccer head coach
Guerrieri and the players gathered at
Olsen Field Monday as the NCAA
bracket was announced. After beating
two ranked teams this weekend to
claim the Big 12’s automatic bid. the
No. 8 Aggies were disappointed that
they did not receive one of the top
eight seeds in the tournament.
“We would have liked to been one
of the protected and seeded teams, but
it is out of our hands,” Guerrieri said.
“We are pleased to host (a regional)
and to play at home.”
Friday in the first round, UT will
face SMU at 5 p.m. and A&M will
face SWT at 7:30 p.m. The winners
of those games will meet Sunday at
1:30 p.m.
Friday’s game will be a home
coming for SWT head coach Kat
Conner, who was an assistant coach
at A&M before taking the head
coaching position at SWT.
Defending national champion
North Carolina claimed the No. 1
seed, followed by California-Santa
Clara, UCLA, Portland, Stanford,
Florida, Notre Dame and Connecticut.
The eight teams will host region-
als this weekend and will continue to
get home games until they are defeat
ed. face a higher seeded team or
reach the semifinals.
The final four teams will meet in
Gerald J. Ford Stadium at SMU
Dec. 7 and 9 in the 2001 Women’s
College Cup.
“The goal is to win it all, and to
win it all we would have to go on a
couple trips,” Guerrieri said.
This year’s NCAA bracket fea
tures 64 teams, up from 48 last
year. However, only four of those
teams are from the Big 12, with No.
11 Nebraska and Kansas joining
A&M and UT.
A&M’s 1-0 win over UT in the
Big 12 tournament championship
will be broadcast on Fox Sports
Southwest on Thursday, Nov. 15,
at 12 p.m. and on Sunday, Nov. 18,
at 3 p.m.

might still be talking about the
Big 12 South title.
And even though the
defensive players say there is
no rift between them and the
offensive unit, no one would
criticize them if they felt a
grudge about their counter
parts’ performance.
If the problems are not
fixed by the time Texas
comes calling at Kyle Field,
A&M will be forced to con
tinue to compare notes with
teams like Ball State and
Vanderbilt instead of
Oklahoma and Texas.
