Myers Stadium showed up Friday night hoping to see the No. 7 Longhorns claim their first ever victory against the No. 14 Texas A&M Aggies. Instead, the 5,376 fans witnessed senior for ward Nicky Thrasher score two goals in the first 14 minutes to lead the Aggies to a 6-0 thrashing of the Big 12 regular season champions. With the win, A&M (11-3-1, 8-1-1) improved a I think that we proved tonight that we are a top ten team. — G. Guerrieri A&M soccer coach its all-time record to 12-0 against UT (1 1-4, 9-1). “When we gave up a couple of goals early, we kind of crashed,” said UT head soccer coach Chris Petrucelli. “It seemed like everything they hit went into the goal.” A&M’s first goal came at the 6:34 mark. Sophomore midfielder Kristen Strutz passed the ball to Thrasher as she was running down the left side of the field. Before any defenders could get back to help UT sophomore goalkeeper Shay Wilkerson, Thrasher fired a shot into the top right comer of the net. Just seven minutes later, Thrasher scored her second goal by putting a move on Wilkerson, who came up to meet her directly in front of the goal. Sophomore defender Adrienne Dillard got the assist by heading a Wilkerson goal kick to Thrasher who was behind UT’s defense. A&M soccer head coach G. Guerrieri said that after Thrasher scored those quick goals, his mid field and defense took over the game. “We had some misreads early on in the game and we were fortunate that Nicky was hot because it took us awhile to get sorted out in the midfield,” Guerrieri said. “Once (midfielders) Andrea Starns and Michelle Royal started to see what we were wanting them to do, that is when we got the game under control.” Freshman defender Amanda Burke scored A&M’s third goal by taking advantage of a UT misplay of the ball. After stealing the ball, she immediately launched the scoring shot over the defense from more than 30 yards out. A&M took a 4-0 lead into the half after fresh man forward Linsey Johnson added another goal. Johnson used her speed to take the assist from Thrasher, run past the defense and fire the ball across to the opposite comer of the net. With the goal, Johnson tied the freshman record of 13 goals set in 1993 by Jamie Csizmadia. In the second half, UT put freshman Alex Gagarin in at goalkeeper but the Aggies continued to expand their lead. Only 2:30 into the second half, Strutz lofted a shot over Gagarin from about 12 yards out. Both teams pulled many of their starters mid way through the second half with the game out of reach for the Longhorns. With 28 minutes left in the game, senior midfield er Cameron Chom was able to score her first goal of the season on an assist from freshman forward Emma Smith. Both Chom and Smith did not start. The six goals scored by A&M equaled the com bined total UT had given up to the rest of the Big 12. “I think that we proved tonight that we are a top ten team in the nation and we are going to go into the Big 12 tournament playing like a top ten team in the nation,” Thrasher said. A&M’s next game will be in the first round of the Big 12 tournament. The Aggies claimed the third seed behind UT and Nebraska and will face sixth-seeded Oklahoma at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
