O’Connor said he hopes the audience will
find that he has a unique sound.
"What 1 hope to accomplish at the outset is
that [the audience sees] that I’m creating a dif
ferent kind of American violin music,” he said.
“It’s a sound that’s new but also friendly as far as
accessibility. The audience can learn a lot about
me by the way 1 interpret the music. Especially
since music is my whole life. I wear my emotions
on my sleeve when I play my music.”
His unique style has earned him the title "dis
tinctly‘American composer.” O’Connor said that
American does not always mean the best as
sometimes, in regards to music, European or
something else might be considered the best, but
that recent events have changed the connotation,
and the title does not carry the baggage it did
before. He said his American styling is now used
for others’ advantage, and he hopes people can
take away something they find intrinsically valu
able from his music.
O'Connor's latest recording, “The American
Seasons,” represents the seasons of human life.
Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons,” and Shakespeare's
“Seven Seasons of Life” were the inspiration for
the piece.
"I wanted to write a seasons piece,”
O’Connor said. “All seasons pieces are based
on Vivaldi because he was the first todo
cousin introduced me to Shakespeare
decided 1 wanted to cover the seas
human life.”
O’Connor’s “American Seasons”is
into four main seasons: 1) Spring:
infancy; 2) Summer: adolescence and a
of age; 3) Fall: maturity; 4) Winter:
and dying.
“In American Seasons, summer,
is the swing rhythm of summer, which!
represents coming of age as swing hasd
America over time.”
