Injuries continue to hurt Ags
Carriger finds himself in
starting role
By Brian Ruff
THE BATTALION
When freshman defensive
lineman Thomas Carriger
signed to play football with the
Texas A&M football team, he
was expected to redshirt his first
year at A&M.
Now, with injuries cutting
the Aggies’ depth chart paper
thin, Carriger has been thrust
into the starting tight end spot, a
far cry from what he was
brought here to do.
“People just kept getting
hurt,” Carriger said. “It is hard
for them, but I am going to have
to step up and try to do what
they were going to do.”
When fall workouts began,
the Aggies came into the season
with a stacked chart at tight end,
with senior Lonnie Madison and
junior Michael de la Torre
returning in 2001.
“Going into the year, we
looked at what we had and
thought we were in pretty good
shape,” said A&M football
head coach R.C. Slocum. “We
thought two of our better play
ers on offense would be
Lonnie Madison and Michael
de la Torre. ”
Offensive coordinator Dino
Babers hoped to run double
tight-end formations, utilizing
both of the returnees’ talents on
the field at the same time. But
with both being hampered by
injuries, the A&M coaching
staff has been hard at work look
ing for solutions.
after injuries
“When you go to two tight
ends and you put out two wide
[receivers], it gives you a run-
pass threat out of that situation,”
Slocum said. “Now, we can’t do
all that. We get very limited in
the kind of plays we can run.”
When Madison blew out his
knee the first day of fall prac
tice, the Aggie offense suf
fered, but still had de la Torre,
and sophomore Fred Spiller to
fill in the hole.
More salt was poured on the
wound later, when back prob
lems forced Spiller to undergo
surgery. Redshirt freshman
Joey Perot moved into the sec
ond string spot, but shoulder
problems continued to plague
Perot and he was forced to sit
out the 2001 season after shoul
der surgery.
That is where Carriger
would come in.
The Class AA Skidmore
High School product was asked
to step in and began working
with the tight ends early in the
season. After Perot's injury, the
two-tight-end formation was
just a memory.
Before the Kansas State
matchup, the Aggies were dealt
another fatal blow, as de la
Torre was diagnosed with a her
niated disk in his back, ending
his A&M football career. De la
Torre had been hampered with
back problems during his first
two seasons with the Aggies.
“Last week was a total shock,”
said A&M tight ends coach Tam
Hollingshead. “Michael de la

A&M freshman Thomas Carriger has been thrust into a starting role this season because of a rash of injuries
to the tight end position. Carriger made his first start against Kansas State and will start against Iowa State.
Torre probably had the best
workouts of the year.”
Carriger started against the
Wildcats and has walk-on Haven
Massey in the second-string
spot. Massey weighs in at just
218 pounds and stands 6-feet, 2-
inches tall, slightly undersized
for a blocking tight end.
“It is pretty amazing that that
could happen at one position,”
said junior quarterback Mark
Farris. “Playing in this confer
ence, guys are going to get hurt.
It is up to other guys to step up
and take their place. To be a
defensive lineman at a AA high
school, and to be able to play at
tight end and play a lot is pretty
impressive.”
Tight end has not been the
only position where the Aggies’
