Men’s golf heads to Red River

The Perfect

Graduation.
The Texas A&M men’s golf team travels
to Dallas today to compete in the Red River
Classic with a two-fold mission — to erase
memories of last year’s No. 12 finish at the
tournament and to improve on their disap
pointing showing at the Tucker Invitational
last month.
Last year at the Red River Classic, the
University of Southern California took the
team title, and the Aggies finished 27
strokes back.
There is motivation to improve on that
finish. But more importantly to the Aggies is
bettering their fourteenth-place showing at
the Tucker Invitational.
“Expectations were really high for our
first tournament,” said Stephen Reed, a
sophomore general studies major. “I think
with all the expectations, we may have come
out and not focused as much on our shots.
We got rattled, and golf isn’t a game that you
can play well when you’re rattled. I would
definitely say we were disappointed. We
have guys with good experience.”
“I think things are so much different than
last year,” said Dwayne Morley, a junior
business management major. "Last year, we
played a defensive style, not trying to make
any mistakes. This year, coach tells us to go
out and fire at every pin and be as aggressive
as you can. It’s an adjustment.”
Morley and Reed led the Aggies in
scoring at the Tucker Invitational. Morley
finished in a tie for 37th and Reed in a tie
for 46th.
Senior Sean Gilliland and freshman Rand
Arbuckle were six strokes behind Reed in a
tie for 73rd, and senior Clay Fullick tied for
98th place.
The Aggies have a new coach this year in

Mexico over the summer to become the

head coach at A&M. Higgins advanced
the NCAA Championships twice inhiiii
years at New Mexico and brought'
high expectations.
Reed said that also might explain
performance at the Tucker.

because of coach coming down here. L. ^ __

back Jonathan Golden in the
backfield, pushing back the
Bears one yard to the two. On
the ensuing play, the Aggie
defense looked to shut down
the Baylor short-yardage crew
again, but the Aggies were
called for illegal participation
and gave the Bears another shot
on second down from just out
side the goalline.
If not for the penalty, the
Wrecking Crew’s momentum
might have stopped the drive
there, but Baylor's Golden
found the endzone on the next
play on a toss to the left side.
That would be the only
touchdown the Aggie defense
would allow the Bears to put on
the board.
“They came in here and
were really motivated,” said
junior linebacker Brian
Gamble. “We played solid, but
we didn’t really dominate.”
Despite the play of the Aggie
defense, they were still forced to
come through on the biggest
play of the game and possibly
save the season. They also had
to do it on back-to-back plays,
each time facing defeat.
After the Aggies failed to
convert on a 48-yard field goal
that would have sealed the Aggie
victory, the Wrecking Crew
walked on the field and were
asked to make one more stop.
With just 1:36 left on the
game clock, and the Bears with
no timeouts remaining, Baylor
quarterback Greg Cicero
moved the ball down the field,
connecting on sideline passes to
allow the Bears to position
themselves for a chance to find
the endzone.
On first and 10 from the
A&M 40-yard line, Cicero loft
ed the ball into the endzone,
where junior wide receiver
Reggie Newhouse went up with
A&M cornerback Sammy
Davis. Newhouse had the ball
initially, but Davis would get a
late hand on the ball, and
knocked it from the Baylor
receiver and saved the game.
On the following play, the
Aggie defense would be tested
once again in almost the exact
same spot as the previous battle
for the ball. Cicero put the ball
high into the air again, and with
all but three defensive players
back in coverage, a mass of
Baylor and A&M players gath
ered in the endzone, all want
ing to come down with the des
peration pass.
At that moment, Kyle Field
was silent, until the official
found Gentry with the ball,
and signaled the touchback.
