The cancellation of the

This week’s meet in

“There’s going to be some

“That’s going to be good.

THE BATTALION
After surviving a tough
non-conference slate with a 3-
2 record, the Texas A&M soc
cer team begins its 2001 Big
12 schedule on the road this
weekend against Texas Tech
and Colorado.
The Aggies faced some of the
best teams from the West coast
and have climbed to No. 7 in the
Soccer America poll and No. 9
in the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America poll.
A&M slipped one spot to No. 12
in the Soccer Buzz poll despite a
close loss to No. 3 Portland and
a win over No. 13 Washington
this past weekend.
A&M, which finished sec
ond in the Big 12 last year with
an 8-2 conference record, will
start this year’s conference
schedule against two of the Big
12’s worst teams from last year.
Last season, Colorado fin
ished 8-1 1 and No. 7 in the Big
12 with a 4-6 record. Tech fin
ished 10th out of the 11 Big 12
teams with a 4-14 record and a
2-8 Big 12 record.
The Red Raiders and
Buffaloes are struggling again
this year, but head soccer coach
G. Guerrieri said both teams
cannot be overlooked.
“Any time that we play
against teams that are familiar
with us and we have to go on the
road, it is always a difficult
game, more difficult than it is
maybe on paper,” Guerrieri said.
Tonight, the Aggies play in
Lubbock where they lost in 1999.
That was the only time A&M has
lost to Tech with the all-time
record between the schools being
6-1 in the Aggies’ favor.
“We know that it is a difficult
environment,” Guerrieri said.

Men’s and women’s
tennis open fall slate
By Kevin Espenlaub
THE BATTALION
Four members of the Texas
A&M men’s and women’s ten
nis teams will open their fall
schedule Friday with a trip to
San Diego, Calif., to compete in
co-ed team action that will con
clude with the champion being
crowned Sunday afternoon.
The fall season consists of
individual competition by the
Aggie netters in which no team
scores are compiled and only
individual national rankings
are affected.
The only exception to the indi
vidual competitions of the fall
semester takes place this week
end when the Aggies will send a
four-person mixed-combination
of men and women to San Diego
to compete in the World Team
Tennis Championships against
other schools from around the
country in which the combined
scores will determine a team
champion.
The Aggies will be joining
the co-hosts, the University of
San Diego and San Diego State
University as well as 13 other
teams, including the University
of Arizona, Oklahoma State
University, Southern Methodist
University, and Texas Christian
University and the University of
South Alabama, last year’s
champion. Texas A&M won the
inaugural tournament in 1999.
Representing the Aggies will
be sophomore Jessica Roland
and senior Marjorie Terburgh
from the women’s team and jun
ior Ryan Newport and Alex
Barragan from the men’s squad.
Each team match will consist
of five sets. There will be one set
each of men’s singles, women’s
singles, men’s doubles, women’s
