CLASSIFIEDS CALL 845-0569 TO PLACE YOUR AD Sports Friday, September 21, 2001 JL THE BATTALION Page 9 Ags face tough test in Nike Invitational By Jeremy Brown THE BATTALION The No. 10 Texas A&M soccer team will face two of the best teams on the West coast and na tion when they travel to Seattle this weekend for the Husky-Nike Invitational. The Aggies will take on the Portland Pilots and host Wasnington Huskies, who are ranked No. 3 and No. 9, respectively, in the Soccer Buzz poll. A&M is ranked No. 11 in the Soccer Buzz poll. The Aggies are coming off a 4-1 victory over unranked Tulane. A&M jumped out early on the strength of two Nicky Thrasner goals but slowed down in the second half. Soccer head coach G. Guerrieri said that a re peat of that performance would not work this weekend. “We have got to be able to maintain a level of intensity for the whole game,“ Guerrieri said, ’’.Any team that wants to win championships can’t let up and expect everything to go their way.” A&M will play Portland on Friday night and then Washington on Saturday. This year, the Pilots are 3-1, with their loss coming against No. 2 UCLA. Eight starters return from the team that finished 18-4 in 2000. One of those starters is Hermann Award nominee Lauren Orlandos. With Orlandos anchoring Portland’s defense, it will set up an interesting battle between her and Thrasher, who is also a Hennann Award nominee as a forward. The Aggie’s defense must contend with mid fielder Erin Misaki, co-West Coast Conference player of the year and forward Christine Sinclair, who is tied with Misaki as the team’s leading goal scorer this season. A&M’s Saturday game against Washington will not be any easier than its Friday game. Washington is 4-0 this season, overpowering its opponents by a combined score of 13-1. The LIuskies’ only close game was a 1 -0 overtime vic tory against Northwestern. The Huskies are coming off their best season with their first-ever Pacific-10 Conference championship and a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament. They were knocked out of the tournament by Portland in the round of sixteen. Washington has been hit by injuries already this season. First, they lost all-conference defender An drea Morelli in the off-season and then Hermann Award nominee Hope Solo injured her groin while training with the U. S. National Team on September 8. Solo was the only goalkeeper listed among the nominees for the Hermann Award. However, Washington’s defense will still be strong as sophomore goalkeeper Lisa Walker has posted two shutouts in Solo’s absence. “It’s going to be good for us to go out there arid play those top ten teams, and show us where ex actly we stand at the beginning of the season com pared to everyone else.” Thrasher said, “Hopeful ly, we will come out with super intensity and play our hardest.” Brigham Young will also compete in the Husky- Nike Invitational, but the Aggies and Cougars will not face each other. After the Husky/Nike Invitational, the Aggies will face McNeese State Tuesday at the Aggie Soc cer Complex. The McNeese State game replaces the Aggie’s game against Samford that was origi nally rescheduled because of wet weather and lat er canceled entirely. Aggie golf squad travels to New Mexico By Joul Hudgins THE BATTALION When head golf coach J.T. Higgins re turns to the University of New Mexico Championship Course today with the Texas A&M men’s golf team, he will be returning to a familiar battleground. The only difference is now he will he rallying enemy troops instead of the home team. As head coach for the University of New Mexico the past lour years, Higgins led the Lobos to the NCAA tournament each year. However, when long-time Ag gie golf coach Cliff Ellis retired after 27 years, Higgins was hired to take over a team that was only two strokes from ap pearing in the National Championships ast May. Coach Higgins has been im pressed with his new squad so far. “There is definitely talent here. The guys also have a great work ethic, and a lot of heart from what I’ve seen,” Hig gins said. “They play hard, and they battle for every shot. All the qualities are there to have a good golf team.” One member of last year’s team that figures to play a major role this season is sophomore Stephen Reed. Reed led the team in scoring last year as a freshman, and finished twelfth in the NCAA Cen tral Regional Fournament in May. He also tied the A&M freshman record when he carded a 66 at the Red River Classic last year. Perhaps more impressive, Reed quali fied to participate in last summer’s pres tigious U.S. Amateur Tournament in Georgia. The field includes the top 312 amateur golfers in the country. He has al ready made a believer out of Coach Hig gins, who has only good things to say about Reed. “Stephen Reed is a coach’s dream,” Higgins said. “He works as hard as he can possibly work, and he’s always trying to do the right thing. He’s very talented. I feel very fortunate to have him there on our team, and having him here for the next three years is very exciting.” See New Mexico on page 10 A R 3 Best Seat In Town HOLLYWOOD USA & Hwy. 30 (a E.
